Help w/ Ultrawide gaming monitor

Hi everyone, hoping somewhere out there might be able to help me out with this.

I've been agonising over what ultra wide gaming monitor to get.

As a bit of background, I mostly play dota2, but also want to be able to use on my console if needs be, as well as being somewhat future proof.

I've been looking for a good deal, as all Ozbargainers should, but deals are few and far between, there was the MSY one (but having literally no stock killed it).

Freesync option is preferred as I don't have a Nvidia GPU, but I can be flexible and also upgrade that if needs be.

In terms of budget, this can be relatively flexible, I just got engaged and this is my 'engagement present', but preferably wouldn't want to go over the $1,200 mark.

If anyone owns one of the below, or another ultrawide and can give me their 2 cents, it would be greatly appreciated :)

Some of the monitors I've been looking at are;
Aog AGON
https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEw…
This one has great size & refresh rate, although the resolution seems to let it down a fair bit?
There's also a model up, much better resolution but lower refresh rate

Samsung
https://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEw…

This monitor looks great, great resolution and decent refresh rate, however is more expensive

Asus Strix
https://www.google.com.au/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwiD-tGTs9HYAhXZ…

Nobody seems to be selling this monitor, which makes me a little hesitant? Otherwise looks very similar to the Samsung

I had also look at the x34 but turned off by the low refresh rate and high price tag.

I've heard the new ultrawides will be coming out, but have been pushed back to Q2 2018, am I being impatient by not wanting to wait? I imagine these are also likely to be on the very high end of the price spectrum.

  • what graphics card do you have?

    • I've got the Radeon 5800 series, only a 1 gb card, I had forgotten how old it is!

think I'll definitely need an upgrade:)

      • You'll need to budget for a decent graphics card when you buy the monitor.

Also, make sure the card puts out frames within the freesync range.

      • You sure will :)

What cpu do you have? You just dont want that to bottleneck your future graphics card, thats all.

  • +1

Congrats on getting engaged! Get as much gaming in now as you may find you’ll have a lot less time in the future!

    • Thanks Halo, trying my best, I recently got her onto the sims on Xb1 so I don't get yelled at while I game ;)

      • Nice job!

  • Don't even consider the AGON, I think a monitor of that size should be 3440x1440 at a minimum.

Aesthetically the Samsung looks great, but the Asus?… not so much. They are both VA panels so depending on your requirements they may not be ideal.

I went through your dilemma not a while ago and I went with the LG 34UC99. It is practically identical to the cheaper LG 34UC98 but has the the USB Type-C connection for my Macbook.

I went with the LG because its an IPS panel which I think is vastly richer in picture quality. It's great for gaming and coding. You're also headed down the right path of curved monitors as it makes a big difference on a desktop.

    • Hey Ryan,

I am considering buy LG 34UC99 to use with my MacBook Pro (the current one with the TouchBar).

How are you finding this monitor? Is the text crisp/sharp like on the Mac?

      • Hi mate, yeah I can't fault it. It's crisp and sharp.

  • Acer Predator x34 is the best 34" G-sync monitor on the market as I understand it. Not sure what you are saying about low refresh - is the same as the ROG Strix which is cheaper because it is freesync (100Hz).

  • Hi OP, where are you located?
I've got an LG 34UM57 I'm willing to sell for cheap and like others have said, definitely look into getting a good graphics card.

  • Your current GPU does not support Freesync. So a Gsync/Freesync option shouldn't be matter to you.

You mentioned being open to upgrade your GPU. So, in terms of Monitor/GPU pairings, you literally have to pick your poison. Nvidia cards are a greater value proposition over AMD given their performance/buck. However, Gsync modules on monitors command a proprietary price premium. On the other hand, Freesync monitors, while cheaper in general, means that you would need to buy a AMD GPU that has been price inflated by miners. That being said, AMD GPUS are generally cheaper in an dollar sense (but not value wise).

If you go the AMD route: Your best UW option is the South korean Crossover 34U100 3440X1440 monitor with freesync (link 1)
If you go the Nvidia route: you best UW option is the X34, currently available for $1299 from various locations

Also, you need to know. freesync UW monitors available now can ONLY get up to 100 refresh rate, AND the Freesync system only works between 30-75Hz. meaning outside this range, the freesync system will not work.

I personally think you should get an Nvidia upgrades simply because its a better value proposition. The power/performance is better, and you pay a premium for the Gsync system, but you dont compromise on the experience. And if you dont get an UW or even a gsync monitor, you will find that you still benefit from its better performance.

Especially if you are just gonna play dota2. its not gonna be worth it to get a UW or a gsync monitor. Dota2 hardly needs it

  • I ended up purchasing the Acer Predator Helios 300 on the recent ebay deal, with the 20% off, and buying as a 'work laptop' which essentially resulted in an extra 30% off, it worked out to be a great deal.

I was leaning towards the X34, before I pull the trigger, I wanted to confirm what I had bought is powerful enough to run it?

    Specs on the laptop
Latest 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor (Up to 3.8GHz)
Latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM

I'd also seen the X34p and Z35p, does anyone have any experience with these?

    Cheers,
