Would you take the experience or money?

Just graduated uni and thinking of taking one of two jobs

First job:
Directly related to my degree, every year of work will increase my level in that field and pay. Great learning experience and improvement of my skills. Hard to get a job in this type of niche within my degree
Salary: $63000 (80k will be achieved in 4 years)

Second job:
Indirectly related to my degree (though as part of their criteria you require a health degree), skills learnt at uni are mostly irrelevant, no development of skills which makes it very hard to move to the first job in the future. Less stressful job and less liability. Easy to get jobs within this type of niche within my degree
Salary: $80000 (obviously opportunity to increase salary however not at the growth the first job offers)

Would you guys take the experience or take the cash first year out.

  • Is it actually written in your employment contract that you will be on 80k in 4 years or is it something they just said?

    • Its stated. Levels increase automatically every year till about after 5-6 years and then you need to apply for a higher position to get the next level.

      • Is it tied to achieving kpi's that have a degree of subjectivity? Gotta be careful. What industry is this in?

Ignore pay. Ignore relevance to degree.

Which job do you want to go to every day? What work do you want to do?

    • Exactly. What do you think you'll enjoy doing more if you had to do it for the next 20 years?

The less stressful job would be my pick, whether that was less or more pay, but that’s just my personality I think. I’d suggest that you try and get as much experience as possible, always time to make money and others ways too.

You young go hard and get experience so you can go up and up and up'

When ya get old and have kids u can relax in that high pay job posting deals on ozbargain

  • Since you have cleared the first hurdle of getting a job,
the second thing is to look at which work you would like to do everyday.. the kind of work that will get you you out of bed and intrinsically motivate you to go to work.
Money is important, but after certain phase if you don't enjoy the work, life would be less enjoyable.

  • Experience, will lead to better money in the long run

  • Take the experience. Cancel ozbargain membership for 4 years. Same same

Why don't you go into more detail with what field you are in? That way people can give you some more practical advice

  • Experience. I've taken that path and now I travel across Australia, Southeast Asia and now North Asia too with my job, money has taken care of itself just fine.

  • Also consider what makes you happy, you are going to be working this job for many years to come.

  • Use the rungs of the career ladder.
