2010 Toyota ACC40 Camry Air Conditioning Panel Stuffed up

My friend’s 2010 Toyota Camry Altise’s air conditioning control panel has started to play up. When the knob for temperature control is turned all the way down to max coldness, it blows hot air but when it’s turned one or two clicks up past max cold, it blows cold air. Everything else works fine, but he doesn’t want to pony up the cash to buy a new panel ($80-125 approx) if he can fix it himself. His old man is somewhat handy with electronics, but isn’t too happy to fix it if it is complicated due to his time being more important.

Does anyone know what is actually wrong with it, and if it can be fixed at home?
Or will he have to go to the wreckers and get a new control panel unit?

Realistically, he’s keeping his beloved POS base model Camry for another 2-3 summers - it’s no A200 AMG "with all the bells and whistles" but he would like to roll around in the max coldness with his air con.

  • This post just kills the ozbargain theory that a Toyota Camry is the perfect boring car.

Really… dad can't spare an hour or two for his son?? lol

It sounds like the switch is busted, I'd just pony up the replacement cost.

Agreed, getting the panel for $80-$125 seems cheap, save the money by replacing the panel himself! Keeping the car for another 2-3 summers means $30-$62 per summer for cold air if two summers or even cheaper per summer for three summers.

      PS: the code looks like ACV40 - $70 here - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TOYOTA-CAMRY-HEATER-AC-CONTROLS-…

Have they tried hitting it really hard? Worked with the clock light in my ‘rolla

    • A technical tap I believe is the correct description

  • but when it’s turned one or two clicks up past max cold, it blows cold air.

Must be the Spinal Tap edition Camry.

  • Get some brake cleaner and spray behind the dial while turning back and forth at the same time. If the contacts are corroded this should clean them up a bit, but its not a long term solution

  • I lived with a similar issue on my Forester for a while. Seemed to forget what setting it was on sometimes. Leave it on cold and it wouldn’t cool, move the dial a click or two and it’d be fine for a while.

Solution: adjust the dial every time i got in the car and it felt warm instead of cool. Wasn’t worth spending money on.

I suggest the same with the Camry. Leave it a click or two from a max cold and enjoy the Ac. It could be the controls or it could be a sensor somewhere that activates the ‘max cold’ setting of the Ac that may not be replaced with the control panel.

  • Don't forget to change the relay which is a known (and my) issue (check youtube).
