HDMI to RCA Cable or Box?

Anyone out there have any experience using a HDMI to RCA cable or box? I'm thinking about getting a HDMI to RCA adapter for some screens I have that have only RCA. I'm not sure what I need exactly as there is a box or cable. Would there need to be some kind of conversion happening, is this why the box exists? Or does the cable do this also?

Either something like this box

Or this cable?

Thanks

Cables themselves don’t do the converting, the converter box is the one doing all the signal re-processing.

The converter will basically change the HDMI, a digital signal, to RCA, an analog signal. So basically, it is what we call a digital to analog signal converter. and if you look on Ali you usually search for a 'active HDMI to RCA converter', active refers to that specific kind of product.

Active converters needs a power source so it'll require to plug in a USB cable of sorts to make it work.

I tried a HDMI android box with an RCA converter (there was a box in the cable) to an old projector before and it never seemed to work quite right.

Sometimes it'd work and sometimes it didn't. It was my last ditch attempt at finding a use for the projector. I just got frustrated and ended up ditching it.

I recently used an HDMI2AV box like what you pictured, sourced from ebay though.
worked OK for HDMI out on laptop to RCA in on old pre-HDMI plasma TV. playing MP4 video the audio was out of sync but could use offset in Media Player Classic to fix.
did not work with chromecast though :(

    • Ah Ok. I was considering using it for the Steam Link on sale at the moment…

Also be aware that HDMI supports both encrypted and non-encrypted data. Devices like Blu-ray players usually put out an encrypted data stream that your box shouldn't be able to decode. The whole reason the HDMI standard was created was to take the existing DVI-digital standard and add encryption to it, precisely because content creators don't want anyone to be able to copy their content. If it can be converted to RCA, it will be easy to copy.

That said, the encryption was quickly cracked. But a device that you buy may only handle non-encrypted HDMI, so beware if you want to use it with copy-protected content, it may not work.
