Trying to Build a Simple PC for Home Use

Hi,

Could anyone recommend a simple/basic motherboard for an intel i5 7th generation processor and RAM, for home use, email/facebook/words/powerpoint/backup photos. No gaming at all. MB around $80. I got given a i5 7th Gen processor (brand new),casing and a power supply unit second hand.

Thanks in advance

  • Budget?

    • MB around $80 if possible. Definitely not more than $100. Thank you

  • You need to look for any brand in the H110M Range.

    Starting from $69.00

Start Here. Add your CPU and then go from there.

    • Do I have to buy a CPU cooler? Can i make do without it?

      • If you have to ask you shouldn't be building one lol. But a secondhander

        • LOL - live and learn :)

      • The CPU comes with a standard CPU cooler, so no, just use that one. Only need one if you planning on pushing it.

        • Thanks for info mate.

        • @monfsts: No Worries, I built a few basic builds, so PM if you need help.

      • if you're handy with tools, connect a car radiator to dissipate heat: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/72/f4/d6/72f4d6fd16af0f431673…

        • Is that radiator out of Mr Beans car?

    • +1

      $64

  • I'd go with Ryzen AM4 mobo, 7th Gen CPU with Intel is a dead end socket meaning there's really no upgrade path as 8th gen coffee lakes all use a newer socket revision

For a budget build that probably makes zilch difference though. If you want lots of IO ports just pick the cheapest full size ATX board you can find from MSY. There is not much to differentiate motherboards when you're dealing with budget level stuff.

  • Have you considered one of the second hand computers from Ebay that get listed on here regularly? Hard to beat value.

    • I totally see your point. I was nearly gonna do that too but then I got given those parts already.

      • Do the sums mate, it might still be cheaper even though you have a few parts.

        • I wonder if this is doable?
Get a refurbished Dell and replace the CPU??? Is this even possible?

        • @monfsts: no. Chipsets.

        • @Slippery Fish: Thanks mate. Good to know. Might have to flog them parts off then if i decide to buy second hand.

        • @monfsts: it all depends on what chipset you get, but if it's a new CPU it's not Gona fit a $200 eBay specials mobo. There are alot of good guides on how to build a PC but I'd be buying something that'll just do what I need instead of dealing with the headache of part compatibility, then how to put together then fault finding when something isn't right ect.

  • Motherboards also come in different sizes, so if you could post the details of the case you have we can find one that definitely fits.

As you have a cpu with stock cooler, case and psu, all u need is the motherboard and ram aswell as a hard drive to run the operating system and store your files.

These will cost a bit more than $80.

Its better to select the ram after your mobo so you can look at what type your mobo can take.

Did u need a cd dive? Or are you happy with usb ports?

    Edit.
Can you see any numbers/letters after the i5… i5-xxxx ?

    • +1

The case and power unit are at my mate's. Will get the info soon. Cpu with me, core i5 7400 lga 1151 7th generation. Thanks for your help and time

      • No problem :)

As above here is one mobo option: $64

  • I tried working out cost to build using the pcpartpicker and other tools on centa com etc. turns out the prices of parts retail make it hard to build a PC for less than the pre-built options.
