Evaporative Cooling installation –
Suggestions on who to go with Melbourne/Dandenong area?
Suggestions on Brand/model?

Planning on getting evaporative cooling system installed in a 4 bedroom (house/kitchen/living & dining room 95 square meters approx)

**I do understand that this might not work efficiently on humid days and I am planning on getting a smaller air con unit for the bedroom at a later stage.

I have been quoted $3560 installed with 7 outlets 14.1kw - Braemar LCQ450
I have been quoted $4790 installed with 7 outlets – Breezeair intercool EXQ190

I have been reading threads on Whirlpool and seen good comments on Breeze air evaporative cooling systems.

Is it really worth spending the extra $1000 for the Breeze air unit?

Any suggestions/ideas/input is much appreciated.

  • I didn't even know there was such thing as ducted evaporative coolers.
The price seems pretty steep. For that amount of money, wouldn't spending a little extra on a proper air-conditioning system make more sense?

The ducting part is the expensive bit and that's going to be paid regardless of whether it's an evaporative cooler or air-conditioner.

      proper air-conditioning

Ducted evaporative cooling is the standard ("proper") air conditioning - i.e Vents (Ducts) in the ceiling into each room.

The other sort is the reverse cycle unit on the wall - typically in one room only.

Think you might have your wires crossed somewhere.

I think bobbified meant ducted refrigerated air conditioner.

      • Ah - my bad!
I think I've confused the terminology - I was thinking the typical "evaporative coolers" being the type that is a fan with a water container.

  • We had a Breezair at our previous home. We installed it around 8 years before we moved out and it was still operating well on original batts.

Works well in Adelaide due to low humidity. Low running costs means can set thermostat and come home to cool house (we would leave the back door open with security screen locked).

Ours was a drum style fan, just like industrial ones. we were told to steer clear of axial fans, sometimes referred to as 'turbo', god knows why.

  • is this something about water-cooled vs air-cooled ?

    • No, this is about evaporative cooling and Braemar vs Breezeair

  • 14kW? I thought evap systems were meant to be energy efficient. Surely a refrigerated AC wouldn't need that much power for a whole house. Think our last ducted reverse cycle AC was a 3-4kw.

  • Braemar is refrigerated reverse cycle
    Breezair is evap…

Would go for the refrigerated in Melbourne due to the humidity.

Evap cooling is not that good when there is humidity.

Have had both forms of cooling. I have refrigerated.

    just my view.
