Home Automation with Google Home and Yeelights + Infrared Sensor + IR Blaster

So I am planning on making my home a little smarter and to make use of the Google Homes I now have. My plan is to get some Yeelights (when on sale) for the porch on entry, 2x IR blasters, and 1x Infrared sensor.

As we have been broken into recently I would like the infrared sensor to go outside along the entry to our house. Which would like up the Yeelights a certain colour/flashing on detection. As we live in a townhouse there is quite a bit of vehicle traffic going past which at night time have their headlights on, this will not set off the infrared sensor correct? I could also then add in something on my partners phone that switches the lights on when she connects to Wi-Fi and disables the flasher/colours, as she parks on the street (no room in the garage).

The IR blaster I was hoping to use to 1. Turn on radio/TV/sound bar and things in the living room and 2. Setup one in the bedroom for an old Aldi light strip that is controlled by an IR remote.

Does anyone see any issues/problems/suggestions with what I have suggested?

I have looked at the Xiaomi IR blaster but it seems the RM Mini does a better job and the Xiaomi does not work with google home?

Just a thought: Won't the flashing lights thing just be annoying?

    • Well it would only be for people other than myself/partner. As I would set it to go off when neither of us are connected to the WiFi (if possible?). It would also be conditional at night only as the infrared sensor takes into account natural light, so deliveries shouldn't be a problem. So who is going to be coming to our front door at night while neither myself or partner isn't home?

  • If you use home assistant you can turn on sonos speaker when the motion sensor is triggered

  • The only reason I didn't buy the RM Mini is that it cant directly integrate with google home/IFTTT. You need a android device or Pi, which since I was using an android with a built in IR blaster (S5) negated the need for the device. If you are going to get a Pi, then you can easily attach a cheap IR LED to the PI to eliminate the device also.
The Xiaomi blaster also will not work with google home out of the box, but needs its own app which is only in Chinese.
If you are up for a bit of electronics work the onion SOC on the front page atm could be connected to a 10c IR LED and transistor to create a wifi ir switch.
Otherwise just wait for one to work out of the box to be released.
