Smart LED Downlights?

With the popularity of Xiaomi's smart lights (and others) on OzBargain and my enthusiasm to start converting my home into one of the 'smart' variety, I snapped up 3 E27 bulbs thinking that surely they must be a standard bulb I can use somewhere in my home.

Alas, that was not the case as I stupidly discovered afterwards. I should have checked my bulbs beforehand of course, but I figured if everyone was buying them then surely they would fit somewhere..silly.

So I wonder, how do people manage to use smart lights in their homes? My home is a recent construction so all lights are basically LED downlights with the exception of a few others, none of which are E27 bulbs. I am oblivious to the standard lights used in other homes, but I do see downlights as a standard in many homes now - so what is a budding smart home enthusiast to do?

Are there smart LED downlights available? I am yet to see any on OzBargain..

  • Converters are readily available.

Lifx recently released smart down lights but the price is currently too restrictive.

  • Hue have them too.. also quite expensive. I have them in my kitchen though, it was substantially cheaper to buy the 'starter pack' from Amazon UK, get it shipped here, then sell the bridge on Ebay. Bought 3 starter packs during a promo so ended up (after ebay sales) getting them for less than $40 a bulb. Still not cheap but heaps better than the $90 RRP in Straya.

Depending of what level of 'Smart' you're after, but most new downlights have 3 pin plugs on them.

You could just unplug the light and chuck on a wifi PowerPoint of some kind.

Just a possible cheaper option :)

    • Can you Please post a link of a plug you are referring to?
      Thank you.

  • OP, I am in the same situation as you. I have been looking at something like this which goes inside your wall behind your light switch, so you keep all your original bulbs. Only drawback is you can't control RGB, only on/off and brightness (depending on your house wiring)

I think the easiest way is to change your wall switch with a Xiaomi wall switch instead of changing all downlight leds.

    There was a deal posted before ( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355143 ).

    Good Luck.

  • Well, can you please take a photo of the product label so we can find out whether it complies with Australian safety standard SAA/RCM/C-tick.

Just keep in mind, if unlabeled lighting product triggers any damage, you can't get anything claimed through insurance.
