Baggage Allowance (Multi-City with Emirates, BA and Qantas)

Hi All,

I've booked a multi-city trip through one booking on Qantas.com flying the following legs:

Perth to Dubai to London (Emirates - QF flight # on ticket)
Paris to NY (BA)
LA to Melbourne to Perth (Qantas)

As I understand, flights between Australia and USA on Qantas, travelling economy, are allowed 2 pieces of luggage per passenger (https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/baggage/checked-bag…)

However, on my booking it shows only 1 piece per person on the flights LA to Melbourne to Perth.

Has anyone had experience with booking a multi-city trip and gotten a reduced baggage allowance on the trip back to Aus from USA? Or if anyone else has been in a similar situation and gotten away with bringing back 2 bags per passenger from USA?

Edit: have previously contacted Qantas. Was told that it says 1 on the booking and asked why I would need two bags if I only started with one. The idea is to buy a whole bunch of things whilst there and use the second bag to bring them home.

Thanks!

Have you considered the novel idea of contacting the airline(s) to confirm baggage allowances?

    • Yep called qantas previously and was told “it says 1 here - why would you need two bags, you’re only starting with one!”

  • have you asked qantas?

  • did you get a chance to checkwith airline or travel agent?

Not sure about Qantas, but 10 years ago when I went around the world including US on one booking, I was told if you travel through the US, your US baggage allowance (ie. 2 bags at ~30kg from memory) follows you around the world.

That was on VA, but I thought it was to do with US procedures/rules more than a carrier option.

    • Note for USA and Canada: Under USA and Canadian regulations, if your final ticketed origin or destination is within the USA or Canada, the airline whose flight number appears for the first flight on your ticket will determine whether its baggage rules or another airline's baggage rules will apply to all the flights in your itinerary. For travel between Australia and the USA, usually (but not always) Qantas' baggage rules will apply. However, note that any additional allowance for Qantas Frequent Flyers or Qantas Club members applies only to the flights specified above.

Not certain what a "final ticketed origin or destination" means, but this (from the page you linked) might suggest that because your first flight is on a QF flight number, their baggage rules follow you. I went US first, so maybe that is why the US allowance followed me.

      • Also read that and wasn’t clear on how to interpret “final ticketed origin or destination” - assuming my final ticketed origin is LA then that should apply.
