Google Home Mini troubles

Just this morning the two home minis I got from those 2-pack deals a while back refused to set reminders and would frequently give the "something went wrong" message. I've already tried unlinking/linking my account, factory resetting and unplugging it to force a reboot (as well as the reboot option in google home)

The units briefly changed the tone of the google assistant voice (I didn't even know this was an option) with no input from me as well.
Managing reminders is still fine but it gives the "I can't set reminders yet" reply when I try to set one (which is,from research, what you'd get through most of last year).

Google's live support had no idea either and just told me to "monitor it" and get back to them.

Anything I should try/anyone know what a possible cause might be?

  • There could be 2 things at play that I can think of.

If both the mini's are within earshot of each other. They both receive the command and I dont think google have programmed it right at the moment to understand which one to execute the command, then craps itself and just says something went wrong. In this case try to go close to one of them try again.

The other issue maybe that it doesnt recognise your voice. Try doing the voice match thing again in a quiet room. I've noticed in the morning when I wake up it doesnt recognise my voice for "wahts my day look like" and gives me everything except for my drive to work.

    • Ill try retraining the voice model. However it picks up fine for literally any other function, even ones that require voice match.

      • Are you using some kind of VPN, behind a proxy server, or have AP/client isolation on your router?

Try resetting your router to it's factory defaults.

      • how are you phrasing it?

        Sometimes it's picky with phrasing

        • "Remind me to…at…"
          "Set a reminder for …at…"

That's what I've tried doing so far,it worked fine previously so I dont understand why it wouldn't now.

My router/modem combo from Telstra is indeed dying, with frequent dropouts, but even when I have a stable connection I still get the same message. I've not modified my router at all nor am using a VPN.

I'll be able to test with a separate modem this arvo so I'll see if that's the issue then. Will try a factory reset/straight up replacement.

        • @Talsek:

Yeah, it could be the voice model!

But I've also had weird problems with the way you structure thr request!

  • Do your minis answer other questions ok, or just not reminders?

    • Yep,every other feature I use (searches,commute,alarms) work fine

      • ok, that "something went wrong" message is normally a sign of no wifi or crappy wifi.

Try moving the device around, but as its answering other questions, it seems to be something else then.

  • Also check the country setting of your Google Home profile. Voice tone when you set to Australia is a bit different from the US.
Maybe yours is in a country which doesn't support multi-user setting???

An easy way to find out if your voice model is properly trained is to ask "Hey Google, Whats my name?"

I have mine set to US. Gives me additional features such as making Calls using Google Voice (you need to set up a Google Voice number for this to work.)

    • Huh ok,does it still give you correct travel directions when you do that?

edit: how do you do that? can't find an option to change only the country

      • It still gives me travel directions based on the home and work location set on my google maps.

I can't remember how to change the country off the top of my head. Can't see the settings for Google home as I'm not on home WiFi ATM.

Maybe try under "Devices," select your home and then Assistant language and then choose English (US).

        I'll try to re-post when I'm home!

        • Hmm,changing the voice setting to English(US) seems to have done the trick.

Doesn't quite get my words right but the reminder goes through without a problem.

  • Any chance you have a G-Suite account? G-Suite accounts have some limitations when working with Google Home.

I tried to find the official doco on the interwebs, but couldn't in the limited time I had. But I'm fairly sure it gives a warning when setting up the Home.

  • I also set a reminder a few days ago and I didn't get notified. Timer works fine though

  • The service we can get in Australia is different with if the GH/GHI in US. I have verified that with the online chat with Google. Lot of services are not available in Australia. Try the services mentioned in this web site : http://au.pcmag.com/google-home-mini/50227/news/google-assis…

Angela Moscaritolo who is the author of this article in PCMAG AU, did mentioned the new activities are available in the US but failed to mention most of them are NOT AVAILABLE in Australia….. her first paragraph is "Planning your kid's next birthday party or family game night is about to get a little easier, thanks to Google Assistant." how misleading it was.
