Modern Cloth Nappies

For parents with babies - what are your thoughts are on modern cloth nappies (MCN)?

If you are using them, how many do you need to make it work? Is there a particular brand that's recommended? Are there many leakages? How long do they last?

I'm considering these but the high initial costs on something that might not work well in the long term makes me unsure if I want to get into them. I don't mind hand washing and using the washing machine every second day.

Bub has graduated from infant sized nappies and is now using crawler nappies. She's at the awkward stage of being too big for infant nappies but bit small for the crawler size at the moment, but generally no leakage besides this current stage where there's small leakages. We're currently using Aldi nappies but also not sure if their crawler nappies will work for us.

  • I used MCN for my little boy during the day. I bought my Little Ripples brand from ebay and did not have issues with leaks. I used them until my little one was 10 months old, we only stopped when I returned to work.
I had about 30 nappies but could have got through with about half that amount. You do need to be prepared to wash at least every second day but I found them to be an excellent way to save money. Bamboo liners are also helpful to aviod too much mess when cleaning them up.
I would recommend buying a few and trying them to see if they suit your families lifestyle (most of my friends thought I was crazy using them). You can get them cheaply on facebook buy, swap and sell sites. I even resold mine once we were no longer using them.

    • This is looking like a decent option. I might go with your recommendation and start with a few first and not completely switch over to MCN.

    • Also, how did you wash them? I was going to rinse off excess, soak them in a bucket of Napisan and use the 60 degree wash option on my washing machine. But they go against all of the washing instructions (no soak, no Napisan, bicarb sprinkles and 35 degree max washing).

      • Rinse. Put in bucket (no water of anything) and wash using a normal wash. Sometimes an extra rinse cycle, dry in the sun.

  • +1

Babyland cloth nappies are great. My wife did a lot of research, read reviews etc. We got 24 of them with bamboo liners for $96 works out to $4 each. Using approx. 10 nappies per day from Aldi at 17c each we save $1.70 per day. Meaning we pull even after 57 days if we ignore the cost of water, electricity, and machine wear and tear. (one extra load isn't much). With solar it makes it even more worth while and significantly more environmentally friendly.

    • Thanks! Did you buy them when they were on special, or years ago? I'm seeing $49.95 for 6 on eBay.

Were there many leakages? How long did they last till your baby outgrew them or were they worn out by that time?

      • Yeah they were on special at the time. Also got breast pads and stuff at the same time. Got them from here. Only 1 leakage so far but my daughter is only young at 15 weeks. We are still seeing how they go but so far we are enjoying using them. We also use aldi nappies sometimes when we go out just for convenience really.

        • Thank you for this info. Soon to be new dad, and wife and I both want to use the cloth nappies snd help the planet.
