What to Check for When Buying a Second Hand MacBook?

So I saw this ad on Facebook marketplace for a…Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2015 model with all the highest specs (2.8ghz, 16gb RAM, 1TB SSD, dual graphics card) with 6 months remainder AppleCare and a newly installed battery with only 35 cycles or so, all for $1620! Seller's reason for selling was because he did most of his work on his iMac instead of the Macbook.

It definitely sounds like a really good price, especially when the seller notes that a new one with those specs would cost over $4000 on Apple's online retail site. Because the good price smells fishy, I did a quick search on the guy and his photography business, which revealed a lot of negative reviews on how he never delivered edited photos after photoshoots and ignored his customers by not returning phonecalls or emails…

All that said though, the seller did publicly provide the serial number of the computer (I checked, and there's nothing suspicious), and agreed to show me the purchase receipts, the Applecare Certificate, and the battery replacement receipt. I will be meeting him tmr paying with cash.

My questions are… what else should I check for when I inspect it tomorrow? And is the price too low to be true?! What do you guys think?

If you buy it and everything is OK you can transfer the Residual Applecare by doing this: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT202712

    • Can I do this after I get the documents from the seller? Or must the seller do this before I get it?

  • I’ve got no idea if the seller is on the level or not but something to consider is that prices for second hand gear, whatever it is, is often dictated by the marketplace. I’ve eventually sold stuff for much less than it’s potentially worth in a good market b/c it just wouldn’t sell.
