New Grazing Platter Business

Hi all,

We are planning on starting a new business venture of providing grazing platters along with the grazing table setup. Wanted to know some thoughts and ideas.

So far we have invested in buying a 1.5 m grazing table with some props and other setup with nearly $250 plus investment.

Although in order to get some photos for advertisement we would have to create a full fledge grazing platter, that is nearly $200-$300 more.

So we are in a sort of catch situation where in order to get any business we have to first invest more. And untill we have some photos its difficult that we will get any business as people would want to see some photos, which is fair enough.

So we came up with couple of options:

  1. For first couple of people give away the grazing table and platters completely free and incur the cost ourselves.
  2. For first couple of people give the grazing table and platters and the customer can pay any amount they like in return .

What you guys think ? How can we minimise the initial investment? Any suggestions are welcome.

If anyone of you is looking for a party we are happy to help. We are located in PERTH.

Thanks for your time for reading this :)

    What is a grazing platter?
Assuming it is hors d’oerves or canapés or similar for a party, surely you could offer to supply at cost to a friend throwing a party? Or ask 10 friends to all chip in $15 toward a party?

Yes it’s like a canapés for the party. That’s a great idea, we had not given a thought about that. We got a small apartment so throwing a party for 10 ppl is a bit difficult at our place but can request a friend to host it but it could be a bit of a ask and might take sometime before it’s all planned. Appreciate your thoughts.

Have a shindig at one of your houses that you provide the grazing platter for. Invite your friends, if they like it word of mouth will help.if not, friends may be willing to give honest feedback. Either way, you’ll get your pics.

    1. It's very unlikely your local council would you prepare your food in a non food lisences premises (if your cringing at $250 for a table run away now)

    2. You will need insurance, what if someone trips on your table, you food poisen someone ect ect.

    3. Have you done a test of your recipes yet? A friend's party would be a good chance to do this.

    4. You have a table, do you have servingware, plates, glasses ect?

There is alot of things that go into catering, you will need a way to transport your food at safe temps ect, log books for temps when it left your premesis, when it arrived, how it maintained every X interval of time.

That's without any real thought into it. You will need a food safety supervisor, and likely alot more. As said earlier if $250 is alot for you your Gona need to have a hard think, even if you rent or can borrow a food lisenced premises to make the food you have to transport it and hold it at temp.

Cold can be as easy as 2 Bain Marie trays with some ice in the bottom one and a lid, hot you will need chafing dishes ect.

    • Thanks for the info. Yes, we are aware of the insurance and planning on getting one. :)

We do have a table and servingware set.

      • Not a set. Every dish will need a plate obviously but what about a spoon or tongs ect

      • It is probably a good idea/requirement to take a couple of food safety courses if you haven't already. They are not long, difficult or expensive.

I think one of those cook at home and send to others apps offered one for free at one point, but I can't remember which one.

  • Is there a way you could set up a grazing table/stall at a wedding/party conference thing (again, there might be a cost with having a stall but it does take money to start a business) and then take nice photos there? but use the platter to attract potential customers as they sample it throughout the day?
Unsure from description if you’re selling the physical table/wooden board as well as the produce (and set up), or hiring them out
Who’s the market? Is it at home party organizers or bigger?

    • Thanks for reply. And sorry for not been clear, yes we want to put it for hire not for selling. It's more of home party organisers at this stage.

    Is there a Business Plan?

Partnership or Pty Ltd or what?

    Business Cards or Flyers?

    Costing or expected Profit Margin?

    A menu?

Do you cater for Vegos or Vegans?

Host a house party, invite insta-bloggers. Nice photos and “advertising” done at the same time. Make sure you have an Instagram and Facebook account first for people to tag their photos.
