Looking to Join Powershop for Electricity in QLD

G'day Ozbargainers,

I am a renter who has been using Origin Energy electricity for over 7 years and am looking to save on my bills.

Powershop has recently become available in Queensland. I have read through OzB forums but Powershop hasn't really been discussed much since 2015.

Existing users, now that it has been a few years, are you still getting reasonable savings from before you switched?

How is the customer service? Have you gotten used to using the app and estimating costs? Did you take advantage of the bonus discounts when they appeared?

Any new information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in NSW and have been with Powershop for almost two years.

Recently re-evaluated other providers and it seems to still be the cheapest at 18% discount with the online saver. However, I usually go with super future packs which gives me upto 22% off. I also buy flash sales, even though it's less than 22% :D

Have no complaints with the customer service. The last few times I've called, they've been quick to help and email support is very responsive too.

Few months ago they even freely upgraded the power meter to a smart meter, now I can see my usage in the app in great detail at 15min resolution, which awesome :)

The Powershop app is great - although it only shows usage for the prior day (not the current live day). Their competitiveness depends on where you live. They aren't as competitive in Melbourne anymore. Their specials are only for a days worth of power. But you can score good rates by pre-paying up to 3 months of power.

Do you know a provider with an app that can provide live meter reading?

      • No electricity retailer provides this.

I’ve been with Powershop for 2 years in VIC
I can find other providers that can beat their rates, but Powershop app is very informative!
Their daily meter reading (by the hours) can help me control electricity usage at home. If one goes awry, I will know immediately on the next day.
With others I have to wait one month to find out that I have $$$ bill…

Basically what you have to do is buy their Bulk Special, and buy the occassional special that they have (weekly/biweekly/monthly usually), and dont forget to only use the Online Saver to pay, do not use their standard rates (they will use this if you forget to pay at the end of the month).

  • Thanks for the replies. I thought it appeared too complicated for a forgetful guy like me, but looks like its pretty easy to stay on top of.
I'll probably end up using the random referral link in OzBargain. 114 users have registered there.

    • Yeah, been with them for years, some of the names of their specials crack me up… like the Donald Trump covfefe special!

  • I got a better deal out of Origin with 21% off supply and usage. Beats Alinta’s offer slightly. The peak rates on Powershop look bad by comparison. Good Solar feed in rate tho.
