What’s wrong with the $5 AliExpress ones?

    • +3

These are far better made. It won't fall apart when you're halfway up a mountain in the dark.

If you just need a headlamp to use around the house or car camping, those $5 ones are fine. But if you're relying on your headlamp to get around, you nerd something tough and reliable.

There is also a red led to help preserve your night vision.

when you're halfway up a mountain in the dark.

What OzB'er would be halfway up a mountain???
And we wouldnt be in the dark, not with all the Xiaomi lights powered by Eneloops

Plenty. There are all kinds of people on this site. :)

If you're carrying a heavy backpack when hiking, you want to minimize the weight you're carrying… which means no unnecessary lights.

    • I don't trust any Chinese brands when they state performance of their products (with the exception of Xiaomi).

This says max 350 lumens. And it will produce 350 lumens.

The $5 AliExpress will probably say 1000 lumens and deliver 50.

In the end you spend less thinking you get more value. But if you take into performance, the value might be less.

I looked at brand name and thought they were cat/dog collars with lights.

    • The strap is adjustable, so they will fit if you want to use them that way. I just haven't been able to figure out how to train the guinea pigs to use the inbuilt safety whistle.

If your buying any bicycle gear anyway, bike24.com sells a good range of Petzl gear including this.

Of course Euro postage means you need to buy quite a few things to make it worth it but there are savings to be made.

I bought my Petzl Tikka 2 XP with Core (rechargeable) battery some years ago now and its still going strong despite how much much it gets thrashed.
