Is American Express Popular in The States?

I am travelling to the US shortly and was looking at getting a credit card for back up.

I was looking at AMEX as it came with 100,000 velocity points.

Question is, is it accepted a lot over there? here seems not so much. so if it isn't, no point getting one.

Thoughts?

cheers

Is american express accepted much in its home country…. What do you think?

    • you would think so, but not 100%, as think I read somewhere it was more of a business thing. Also heard Visa isn't as popular as it is here either. maybe as Amex is more popular

      I don't know, I don't have one. Hence why I'm asking

but yes, a stupid question in hindsight

Yeah just like Fosters is popular in Australia.

    • thanks gaz, would appear its not that popular as jimmy thinks, some more googling also said the fees are still crap there, so not a lot of people like it.

but I do like velocity points!

  • From my experience with a few trips to the states I've never had any issues with businesses not accepting AMEX.

Yes the acceptance there is a lot better than it is here, however be aware that there is no Australian-issued Card that I know of that waives foreign transaction fees like a 28 Degrees/Bankwest Zero/Citibank Plus/Coles Rewards card does, so every transaction will be slugged with a 3% international transaction fee.

Just something to be aware of before you apply.

    • yeah.. that's true.. thanks MN

    • Commonwealth Bank Platinum and Diamond issued amex have no foreign exchange fees. These cards are often free with home loan packages too.

NAH MATE NOT POPULAR AT ALL
its called American Express for absolutely no reason.

  • It's accepted overseas but there are international fees.

Lol… American express not accepted in America.

Thats like asking if ANZ is accepted in Australia and New Zealand.

      "ANZ" isn't a card…

Must I state the obvious that I'm talking about ANZ issued cards… Since you know, the thread is about cards?

        • -1

You know ANZ used to issue Amex branded credit cards, and guess what? Plenty of shops in Aus/NZ didn't accept those ANZ issued Amex cards…

          .

Plenty of shops in Aus/NZ didn't accept those ANZ issued Amex cards…

"Plenty", so not all. So there are still shops in Aus/NZ that accept Amex (big retail chains and supermarkets at least). Thanks for confirming that amex is accepted in Aus/NZ.

I still don't think you got the point in the first comment, woosh, but meh. You're just trolling and finding things to argue about.

  • Probably more because I read somewhere that Aldi had already accepted Amex in the US and cotsco had switched partnership from Amex to master/visa (their membership card tied up with Amex like Qantas cash card) . If those two stores who are known to be too stingy to accept Amex actually did then who else wouldn't?
