Hi all, long time lurker, first time actually posting anything.

I have recently come into contact with mPort, which has placed a booth in my local shopping center, so I gave it a whirl.

This is a 3d body scanning service, that requires you to physically enter a mPort scanner, strip to your undies, and allow an infrared scanner to 'map' you.

These scanners have a companion app for Android and iPhone, and the idea is that you can get some basic info if you are a free user (weight and height only) or you can keep track of lots of information if you are a premium user (full 3d body scan avatar, hip, waist, bicep, neck measurements, estimates of body fat etc.).

Premium entitles you to track your info over time and see changes as they happen. Premium also entitles you to unlimited measurements (free, can do this too, but you cannot keep track of the results). Cost is for 12 months subscription, they do give you 1 month free, but you must enter a credit card/paypal details to enable this. You can cancel during the 1 month without being charged.

There seems to be quite a few negative reviews of the service as a whole, presumably people want to get it all for free, which is natural, but in fairness to the system it does give some really interesting insights into your body shape and size over time. If you are like me and have some spare kilos to lose, then this may be good for you to help keep track, and allow you to target specific problem areas during your exercise routine.

There are numerous other features on the site and app, but I have not used them so cannot comment, however the body mapping is an interesting tool, and I am finding it to be a really motivating tool.

Check out their site/app and see where scanners are located near you, and if there is one near you and you could use some additional motivation (or guilt) I think you could spend $40 in far worse ways.

Forgive the Let Me Google That For You style question… But, what are the privacy implications of this?

    • that they know you body size and weight

No it is a worthwhile question, while obviously not able to speak for the company, my understanding is that the actual scanning is carried out using infrared scanners rather than camera imaging, so in theory the only information available about you is the shape of your 3d silhouette, no actual imagery or photography of your person.

The actual booth I have been using is fully private and enclosed, with a lock from the inside only, so cannot be opened by others during use.

The app requires relatively normal permissions for use on Android. The log in method allows you to scan the QR code of the booth with your phone app, so that will require camera permissions on you phone, not especially controversial though in my opinion.
