Air Conditioner for a Small Room Portable $500-600

Summer heat is unbearable so instead of buying pizzas I'm buying an air conditioner for my small bedroom.

Thoughts ideas?

Preferably one that needs no further installation if possible though I do have a window to put the stuff outside.

Budget $ 500-600 but cheapest is probably best

  • I am currently using one of these from Kogan. I am quite happy with it. Our room is about 20m2.

  • Portable a/c's are not that effective on a hot day especially if you live in a old house without proper insulation.
    Also very heavy on power

  • We have a 5.5 Kw Dimplex Portable. We picked it up on Gumtree for $250 but your budget is a lot more so you would have no trouble getting one. They are like $1100 new. This is able to cool a room that is 14 foot by 28 foot. We keep the doors closed. The ceilings are 14 foot. We have to put the exhaust in the window. The only thing is it is quite noisy but we still watch TV with it on. It is an Inverter so not so power hungry. It has a remote. We are thrilled with it. The heat being expelled out the window via the exhaust is incredible .

Youll find these on Gumtree in your price range. Top of the range, I've just sold mine for $300 as we installed a big split system. It was a lifesaver in our bedroom. Recommended.

  • I have the 10,000BTU Kogan. It's fine in a 22m2, as long as the ambient temperature is below about 35C. Above that it struggles. On 40C days it'll cool the room to 30C. It's also very loud. Get 12k BTU as an absolute minimum for any room, preferably 14k

  • I'm pretty happy with the Honeywell MN10CES. Does bedroom great. Bought on Gumtree brand new for $500.

Just a reminder to all users of these portable airconditioners - do not extend the exhaust pipe. These units are designed to work so that the fan can push the hot air out through the supplied length of hose, and if you make it longer it could strain the motor (and possibly burn it out). A shorter length of hose is better / more efficient.

instead of buying pizzas I'm buying an air conditioner

Good choice, pretty sure pizzas don't reduce air temperature…unless you were planning to buy frozen pizzas…but even then I would probably still go the aircon.

  • If you can find one (they are RARE) get one with an option for dual hose (1 hot out 1 fresh in) these work much better and cost way less to run. You'll usually pay $40-$80 for the 2nd hose, or just jerry rig something.

Masters used to see one for approx. $400 and KOGAN had one too, but i'm not sure they sell that model anymore.
