DisplayPort Cable - Which One Is Better?

Hi everyone! I recently purchased an Acer XB1 (Predator) monitor and it features g-sync. I want to make use of it hence I have to use a DisplayPort cable coming from a DVI monitor. Unfortunately the cable length that came in the box was too short hence I'm looking of a cable that's just slightly longer. After doing some reading, some people have said to look for 'certified' cables for 'better quality'. In this case I have nailed it down to these two:

Twice as expensive but apparently it is known to be of higher quality?:
Genuine StarTech.com DisplayPort / DP 1.2 Cable with Latches – Certified - 2m

Generic DP cable but half the price of the above:
Premium 6ft Displayport cable 1.2 Display Port to DP Cable Male to male to 4K

Basically I'm concerned about the situation with HDMI cables where 'MONSTER' HDMI cables are marketed to be 100x better than the everyday HDMI cables (which we all know is untrue). Does anyone know if the Startech cable is actually worth double the price as the generic one? Both are 2m and DP 1.2.

I'm happy to purchase any at the end of the day, just thought I would educate myself on this matter! Thanks

Watty

    read the specs.
more expensive one supports higher res

    • Ah right you are! I should have mentioned that my monitor is 2560x1440 so the generic one should do fine?

      • just buy the cheap one.

        • Will do thanks mate!

        • @watty: apparently they're not certified. it's different to the HDMI situation. Read more here

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: Oh wow that's interesting to read. Looks like both are just generics then… Not sure which one to buy in that case. Probably just go with the cheaper one since it does the job.

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: Looks like the StarTech.com - DISPL2M is certified then (saw it on the list). I think I'll just buy that. Considering I spent a hefty amount on the rig and the monitor, $20 on the cable ensures I'm getting the most out of it.

        • @watty: yeah that's what I did but needed it asap so had to fork out 60 for the Belkin from hn

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: I'm using HDMI at the moment while I find a replacement!

@watty: Haha waiting for the day it dies so I can get a refund. Soon I hope

  • go for gold … fittings

  • What does being "certified" mean? I can understand with Apple charge cables, but HDMI cords?

I'm assuming it means there's a certain level of QC with the cords. HDMI cords I'm not too sure about but DP ones are recommended from what I've read.

If you go for any cheap cable be weary of the PIN20 issue PIN 20 & HardForum (First Post). You will also find multiple other pages by simply googling it.

I needed to do surgery on my cable after i had weird issues with my PC not posting and monitor flickering every time a light was turned on and off in my house. These cables can damage your hardware if not attended too.

    • Thanks for that mate, I'll definitely not cheap out on the cable and purchase the more expensive one. At the end of the day an extra $10 gives you that little more peace of mind.
