Poll: Best High End Laptops and Ultrabooks under $2000 in 2018

Moderators at OzBargain have decided to run yearly polls to decide the best products in popular categories that get asked repeatedly in the forum. Our aim is to have a central thread where users can vote on the items, suggest options and also change their vote throughout the year. The polls will end once the year is over.

Question

What is the best laptop, notebook or ultrabook for 2018 under $2000?

Running alongside the sub-$1000 laptop / notebook poll, this year we will also look at what you will recommend for higher end devices that exceed the $1000 dollar budget but are priced anywhere between $1000 to $2000 dollars.

Fire your suggestions away — what kind of laptop, ultrabook, or convertible 2-in-1 would you buy for under $2000?

Tips: Found a device you liked? You can click on the 'Related Products' section to view current or active deals, and see forum discussions related to it.

  • Don’t see a device that you like in the poll options? Make a (sensible) suggestion that fits the $1000 budget and we’ll add it to the list
  • You are allowed to change your vote.

How to make a Poll suggestion: Fill out this little box which appears on the top of your usual commenting textbox.

Grabbed my Vostro 7570 for 1600 directly from Dell , in a uniquely hideous Bali Blue (basically metallic double shade of.blue) on a clearance.
    https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/business-laptops-ultrab…

    Intel Core i7-7700HQ NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB GDDR5) 1000.00GB HDD + 128.00GB SSD 8.00GB RAM

  • I was excited for the new Retina Macbook Air. Then I saw the price…

  • Suggested Microsoft Surface Book 2

I just bought a Microsoft Surface Book 2 for my wife and the device is amazing. Its only draw back is a weak power delivery, but that only affects the higher end models with discrete GPU.

The 3000x2000 display is gorgeous and amazing for productive tasks.

The form factor is incredibly well designed. While it is not as thin as the MacBook Air 13 (2013) that it is inteded to replace, it is not uncomfortably thicker and the versatility is amazing. The hinge is robust and the connection sturdy. When the device is docked onto the keyboard, it feels like a real laptop. It can also be connected in reverse, so that the keyboard provides stable support. In tablet mode, it is as light as my Chuwi Hi10+ but much better in each and every comparison except price.

Sadly, the RAM and solid state upgrade are overpriced, but the minimum spec (8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) are good enough. I got a bargain for 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD because we bought it through the university. The pricing on Microsoft's website is what I use to make the recommendation here.

It was one of the fastest set up ever too: It took me less than 15 minutes to shrink the Windoze partition and install Ubuntu in dual boot. Still have to configure Windows to run inside a VM, and then it is good to go. It is fanless too.

Initially we considered the new MacBook Air, but price and the T2 were deal breakers.

With regards to the other big manufacturers:

Dell and HP angered me because their best SKUs are only available in the US.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon X1 came in second. There are some SKUs that have excellent specs, but reading all the horror stories about quality assurance persuaded me not to take the risk.

Acer and Asus had only boring stuff available.
