GST Claim at Airport (Item under $300 without Freight)

Hi.

Just bought this

Total cost was just over $300 but $6.60 of that was freight which is itemised on the tax invoice. Without it, the item cost is $297.

Given that the minimum to claim is $300, do they include the cost of freight into the cost of the item?

I know, extended warranty doesn't qualify, though… because technically the warranty if called upon is fulfilled in Australia.

the total, so if it includes post it includes that.
enjoy the lines at TRS in sydney ;)

    • Melbourne, but thanks. ;)

      • No, he asked you to enjoy them in Sydney.

  • Claim it on income tax, might be more beneficial, unless doing this anyway

    • Can I do that? It is a work trip and honestly I wouldn't have bought it if I wasn't flying long distance overnight and have to go back to work first thing…

      • I don’t see why not. Your answer justifies the purchase,

I bought a pair purely to mute out the standard loud talkers at work who purely come to work to talk. I never took mine home

It’s under 300 bucks so instant deduction . Depending on your bracket it could be ~ 120 back to you

  • Not sure if things have changed, however a similar post was made on Whirlpool where it was found that shipping is not included in the total cost of the item;

I was told no, because it only covers goods and delivery is a service.

I can confirm that it does not include Shipping. Shipping is deducted from any claim, so if your total without shipping is under the threshold you might not get your claim through.

    • Practically the same situation! So I might not get a refund then.

  • +1

I made a claim in Melbourne which included the shipping but when I got to the TRS counter they said that they had to remove the shipping cost and readjust my claim.

    • So where does that leave me? Spent more than $300 but only $297 was the item.

      • buy something else from the same seller for $3 or more

  • Why was the total cost over $300? Did you not use code PRAWNS for 20% off?

    • Invoice says that. Actual cost $244.20

      • Can only claim what you paid, otherwise that would be fraud

        • Sigh… Your answers both good and bad for my situation. ;)

          Thanks for your input.

$95 is still better than nothing :)

        • @bluedufflecoat: where r u going for work, sounds like s free trip anyway. See if your work will pay it

        • @unclesnake: nah, very unlikely. :) as you said free trip albeit flying to and fro in 4 days is not fun. Going to south east Asia.

        • @bluedufflecoat: just smash the food. Why not just get sleeping pills. Cheap and work a treat

  • maybe ask them to adjust the invoice for you?

  • You have to spend $300 and over on goods, shipping is not a good that you can present and show. You cannot get a refund.

  • Spend another $9 on this to receive $27.81 GST refund = $18 profit, then resell battery or give to someone with a GoPro HERO3.

    From the Home Affairs website:

You can claim a refund if:
    - your purchases are from a single business with the same Australian business number (ABN) and total AUD 300 (GST inclusive) or more. For example, if you bought items from one business, even on separate invoices, that together total AUD 300, these items could be eligible for a tax refund under the TRS

Don't forget to take the battery with you on the plane and yes, spare lithium batteries can be carried as hand luggage without any issues.
