Best Home Security Cameras

What’s your Home security camera set up - Brand, wired, wireless, single multiple etc.. I have a few Xiaomi ones but just use it for live view without any recording.

Interested to know how people set up Xiaomi or other branded security cameras..

If you want something decent and more true security, I'd use something else other than xiaomi
I have them, does the job for what I intend it to do, but wouldn't really call it proper security

I personally like the arlo pro, easy to setup and pretty good quality for what it is

    • agree reno, i just ended up impulse buying about 5 Xiaomi with 2 still up-opened from Sept last year. So wondering if worthwhile setting these all up with SD cards or ditch them all and go with other proper cameras.

I have 16 Sannce security camera located inside and outside of the house. Records at 1080p, cameras are 1500tvl. They are all wired and is connecting to my DVR which currently has 2TB of storage. I currently have two recorders, one connected to the internet and one is just closed loop. In case of it being hacked. Both are also running off a UPS.

        $600 self installation

        • that's quite reasonable imo and a full on setup..

  • i use xiaomi cams and have about 10 mobile phones that run this app https://alfred.camera/

I use mostly cheap DLink cameras connected over Wifi being monitored & recorded by Security Spy. Whenever I see a 1080p camera that I can connect to via Wifi I buy it and add it to the mix.

4 Xiaomi Cameras, connected to Surveillance Station on Xpenology via RTSP on an HP Microserver using Motion Detection for recording.
    Works great!

I have a fairly small home, and since I cannot bother with installing any outdoor stuff (can't be bothered drilling holes for power and networking conduits) all I use is Xiaomi XiaoFang — one facing balcony and one indoors in living room, recording to 32GB SD cards

However, the new Xiaofangs are region locked for some inexplicable reason so it's a gamble when buying new ones.

    • i know, luckily the ones I got were all ok in terms of region except for 1 which had a lens issue, but the guys replaced it and let me keep the broken one..

Reolink are great. Their 4k cameras are cheap and work with Synology etc

    • @ficklelife they look good specs wise, any good deals you know of..

Im an Electronic Security Tech. We instal Hikvision at all our sites. Excellent quality. Cheap and reliable.

    • Looking at the other threads looks like Hikvision is the choice for the professionals.. would you recommend for a DIY’er ?

      • If it need to be wired (POE), you prob need a licence cabler.

      • Yeah they aren't that difficult. We run cat6 and crimp to rj45. Can just get set meter with already terminated cat6 cable. If buying from china.
Get both cameras and hikvision nvr from their. Cameras sourced from local supplies firmware wont run on Chinese nvr.

      • Setting up the device to link with your phone to view anywhere was a pain to set up. Some of the apps form the official manufacturer are in Chinese and most of the time don't work. But this was a few years ago and was an import from china. So things may have changed.

        • Yeah for remote access. Can use hik-connect app these days which is similar to their old ddns service.
Or get a static IP and open up the required ports.

I use 4x Hikvision (Chinese knockoff ones) POE at home, storing to a NAS. I use ispyconnect.com for remote viewing which was very easy to setup. I tried heaps of programs before settling on ispy.

  • Hey guys looking into cameras for home. I see on ebay you can get dahua poe setups for a good price. But the state the firmware is not upgradeable. Is that a problem?
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232605154006

    • Most no-name brand or knock off cameras are not firmware up-gradable, shouldn't be an issue. However with the eBay advert you linked it doesn't say how many cameras it comes with (that I can see). It's an 8 channel NVR but how many cameras does it come with? Also, it doesn't appear to come with a HDD so you have to supply that as well.

    • also check out the Aldi 8 Channel out coming out this Wednesday

  • Any one find that the xiaomi camera are too sensitive? Any way to make it better? It triggers over 50 times a day for me.
