Domain Name, Hosting & Costs

Hiya all, could I please request for some assistance regarding my situation?

My current situation is;
1. Domain name through NetRegistry;
2. Hosting through Hostmonster.

My requirement;
1. Email addresses using my domain name;
2. No web pages required.

My hosting through Hostmonster is expiring next month, and the renewal is going to cost US$449.64 for 3 years (Renew Plus Hosting, US$12.49 per month)

Is there any way I can reduce the costs – or maybe there are other companies I need to look at?

TIA!

  • So you just want email? No cpanel or SSD webspace, SSL, ram etc

  • Those prices are ridiculously high. Not surprised though. Netregistry is a rip off. You can get a decent VPS with DigitalOcean for $5USD/month which will do pretty much anything.

    Are you happy to try options without cPanel?

    You should be paying about 10USD per year for a .com/.net domain. You can get free email redirection through Namecheap if you register your domain through them.

    Otherwise transfer domain name to NameSilo or ventraIP (if AU).

    Host DNS through Cloudflare, Namecheap or NameSilo for free.

    Host email through Zoho or another free host. Or look at Office 365 or Google Apps with all your savings (approx $5/mth/user).

    For a few static web pages look at Amazon S3.

    Since you don't need webpages, you can throw out web server hosting expenses with hostmonster because it's just plain unnecessary and just pay for a hoster to host just your email.

    I'd recommend google's g suite at $5 per user per month for the privilege of using the entirety of google's service including gmail's email services under your domain.

    I assume you have control of your domain's setting, you'd have to change your domain's mx records to lead to google (which google will guide you through).

    Google's G Suite for more info.

  • Google's G Suite still allows a free single-user domain? If you do not need the benefit of full suite (and other issues come with G Suite, for example no access to quite a few features available to normal Gmail users), then

    • Just get a domain from VentraIP / Zuver.
    • Set up Email Forwarding so name@your-domain can get forwarded to your Gmail/Hotmail mailbox. I know VentraIP does mail forwarding for free.

    Total cost: AUD $22/2 years.

    Ended up moving to Zuver for the time being, considering I have quite a few email addresses on my domain. Not too bad for $3 per month for hosting and $11 per year for domain, total yearly cost $47. Will have a look into the other options mentioned above by Kipps, Purec and Scotty.

    Thank you very much for all the help folks!
