Cheap Camera for Kids to use during holiday travels

We are going on a overseas holiday with the kids. I'm thinking of giving the kids a cheapo camera/phone to take pictures if they want. We are going to have the kids document the trip by keeping a diary/scrapbook as we would like to promote their writing skills. As part of this, I'd be nice if they can take some photos to add to the scrapbook.

Now, being kids, they may lose the device - so I need something cheap that I won't care if they lose it. If its a phone, that could be better as I can set it up for auto upload to the cloud. Plus, we also do a lot of geocaching, so the kids can use it for that purpose as well.

My current phone is a Mi4 Note Pro and my wife's is a Ulephone S8 - maybe an older version of these might be suitable. It would be nice if there is something sub $50.

Sounds like you are leaning towards a phone but this looks okay for kids:

Although not high quality but you didn't mention if you wanted something high quality and for less than $50 it might not be the best quality….

Personally id get a cheap digital camera off gumtree

Ask family and friends for old devices.

  • get an iphone 4.

  • For sub $50 it might be a challenge if you care about the quality. Will it be mainly day time photos or do you think there may be some low light or night time shots being taken?

Also, how old are the kids (just to gauge how much they're likely to care about quality or usability)?

    • Kids are 7 & 10.

Not too concerned about the quality.

      • In that case get whatever prepaid Android smartphone is on sale in Coles/Big W/Woolies/etc. It'll be network locked no doubt, but should serve your purposes fine.

  • Try a camera with a viewfinder, Canon G12 or similar circa $100 - $180 s/h. The website DP Review has much info on all sorts of cameras. It depends on age, but if the youngsters are around 8 upwards they should be able to cope with such a camera. The viewfinder will engage them better with photography, rather than a phone or screen only camera. Just remember it's essential to have an extra battery with it. Fuji X10 / X20 are great, but possibly for a older child, and these cameras are harder to find. I have an XPro Fuji which I prefer to my SLR digital's, but that's another story and age group!.

    • I fully expect the kids to either lose the cameras or it'd get stolen, not looking for anything 100+ as I need to buy two of them as well, one for each kid.
