To people with High Prescription (E.g. -6) Glasses

So the higher your prescription the thicker the lenses. Thick lenses sticking out of glasses makes for a super nerdy look that i'd rather avoid, meaning I always go for the ultra/super thin lenses which are very expensive. E.g. Big W sell the ultra thin lenses for $300 alone. Oscar wylee is $250.

In the past I've been using clearly.com.au as their 1.67 index lens (advanced thin air lens) is $95. Negative being I can't try them on beforehand so the fit is always hit and miss.

Is there anywhere cheaper? Any decent priced physical stores? where do you purchase yours?

I get mine made overseas in South East Asia when I go. Approx $20 thinnest lens.

    Including frame (unbranded)

  • The model number is written on the inside of the arm, shop around and find the style you like then buy online

  • Get it overseas.

Or try in a physical store then buy it online, if you have the prescription and model number for the frame

Clearly will refund you if you aren't happy with the purchase, i went through i think minimum 3 before i was happy with the pair i have now through them

    • I did buy 1 from them and I wasn't happy. But my prescription is pretty high, so I felt bad to try again after refunding them. After reading your comment, maybe I'll try again.

      • I'm basically blind without mine ;/, I also felt bad but they were fairly accommodating in refunding and taking on new orders, was really happy with their service

        • Same here :( They were very accommodating. Due to their stuff up, the order was taking longer than in supposed to and they chased and chased the lab and suggested to change it to my hotel address as I was going away for holiday (I wanted them for my holiday as mine are badly scratched already). Too bad those didn't work out.

What was your issue? Was it the frame or lenses?

        • @purplelady:

Awh : ( Sounds like a weird scenario though.

My issue was simply, i didn't like the frames that i had picked, and i told them that each time and they were fine with that as it's part of their policy.
Actually my first pair i had the blue light filter and wasn't a fan of it, but i also didn't like the frames, but the final pair im using now from them i do like alot

          @Godric: ah..I see. Ok, I might give them a try again :)

  • Yep, if you can get them overseas, then yes, the price difference is ridiculous.

That being said, there's OWNDAYS that I discovered recently. I got progressive multifocals done for $330 all in. And the frames I chose weren't even on sale. Every time I've been in, there's some sort of sale going on and they're genuine price cuts.

You might find something. Anyway, AFAIK, their pricing structure includes a single reflex lens on the price you're seeing. Anything extra is an extra $100.

So if you find frames that is just $100 then a high index version would come out to just $200

    Good luck.

  • Go to India and get Lasik Done.
Every major city has professional Lasik surgeons.

My wife got her eyes done in Australia for about $3000 for both eyes. Her prescription was up around +4.50.

How much is a round trip to India going to cost? How much is the lasik treatment? How much are you realistically looking to save going to India?

And nothing personal, but I would rather have it done here where the climate is nicer, the air is cleaner and the hospitals are safer. Just way to many risks involved for my eyes getting it done in a 3rd world country just to save a few $$’s

      • I was in south korea a year ago for a holiday (got $300 return tix) and figured I would get it done there.
Cost about $1100 for both eyes and no problems at all. Very professional and doctors spoke perfect English.
$30 for drugs/eyedrops and $300 for a 4.5 star hotel for 5 days while in Seoul. Loads of yummy food.
I has a quiet high prescription (6-7) and astigmatism so the cheapest place I could find in oz was $2000 per eye.
Perfect vision in both eyes and having to forget about glasses or contacts is blissful.

      • Mine LASIK costed $4500 in Sydney.

Got quoted for the same procedure in Vietnam for $2800.

Figure out $1700 wasnt worth it for the trip to Saigon.

      • The suggestion was for someone possibly saving money over specs . No offense taken. The points are pretty accurate if you are not aware of the place.

  • i get mine done from Vision Direct
    im a -4.75

    • Got mine from Vision Direct too, very happy with them.

      • i also get frames from them and get the lenses at OPSM as VD doesn't do blue light protection

        • Yes they do. Mine has blue light protection. It was $20 extra, on top of $99 for the Super Thin & Light (1.67). (plus 30% off lens promotion at the time)
I didn't know they did it until I was checking out and saw the option. Also just bought mine 2 months ago.

        • @dcuksuop:
          ohh sweett!!
when i looked about 8-10 months ago there was no option.

  • The wider the lenses, the thicker the edges. If you go for a set of frames with narrower lenses, you wouldn't need as thick a frame to cover the edge/or you could kick it down an index to save money.

  • Have a look on the inside arm of your best-fitting glasses. The numbers tell you how wide the glasses are, so if you match that online you'll always get well-fitting glasses. Half the battle with fitting glasses is getting ones wide enough for your face (and not too wide).

    E.g. mine say 54 17-135

  • I get my multifocals from specsavers. No issues with them. I am approx -5 in both eyes. Multifocals make it harder as well to get the lenses transitions correct. Even with single vision, the stronger the prescription the more important it is to get the centre of the lens in the correct place. I much prefer to walk in and let them measure my face when I buy glasses. It costs me around $300 for 1.67 multifocal lenses. (plus the health fund contribution). I always ask them where the price jump is with the Refractive Index - but it has been fairly constant over the years at 1.6ish.

  • I have tried these guys: The Optical Superstore
And have been very happy with them and their pricing specifically the store in Knox.
I have referred multiple people to them whom have been happy as well.
They are usually heaps cheaper that big store brands like OPSM …
