  • 15" & 17" frames only….for the tiny among us

  • +5

For what it's worth, this same bike has been around since 2013 with the RRP going up by $400 but the sale price relatively stable.

  • Pedals Fluid, P-Spec, Alloy Cage MTB with ball bearings

Might get one just for the pedals…

  • $1399 for a bike with a Deore gear set….yeah OK.

    • $499 now.

For those of us who aren't in the know, I take it Deore is lower quality / entry level spec ?

      • +3

Yes, Deore is the entry level for reasonably decent MTB stuff. Reasonably decent meaning something you buy from a bike shop and not from bigw/kart/target.

        This guide is fairly helpful:
        https://www.bikeexchange.com.au/blog/mountain-bike-groupsets…

I attempt to use XT if I can afford it for MTB and CX, and Dura-Ace for road.

Another consideration is the age of the groupset ie the model number. Although its a bike on sale in 2018, that doesn't mean that the components are current generation.

It would be good to know the weight of the bike.

BTW, if you're looking at MTB, components wear out a bit quicker than on road, due to the harsher environment and the occasional collision with obstacles. Around Sydney, most tracks involve sandstone which means sand, which means you're grinding things away. Reason I mention is that if the general frame and forks and bars are solid (ie reliable and not too heavy), then its not that big a deal if the groupset is Deore, as you'll upgrade it as things wear out.

My rule of thumb is shifters, then derailleurs are the most important (and most expensive), whereas it doesn't matter that much on the cranks, pedals and rear cogs.

        Phew.

        • Wow, now I wish I did more research before buying my bike a few weeks ago…

I pretty much just went with lowest price for a bike with disc brakes and a front suspension fork ($410):

          https://www.bicyclesuperstore.com.au/malvern-star-hurricane-…

I have no idea what the groupset is, but I'm guessing it must be budget quality… :(

        • @brotherrfranciz:

I have no idea what the groupset is,

Tourney. About 4 levels below Deore. You can upgrade the bits when they break :-)
It has 7-speed cassette, not freewheel, so not total junk. Just avoid any jumps.

        • @brotherrfranciz: As long as you're having fun on your bike. As @manic says, you can upgrade things as they break - and everything breaks! The trick is to keep the ratio of $ per ride as low as possible.

        • Whereabouts in Sydney can you ride?

        • +1

@acky: I'm in the Northwest, so there are a few options - OMV at Hornsby, Wylde at Cecil Hills, heaps out near St Ives and the Northern beaches. Basically any firetrail in a national park is rideable, then there's the Royal national park down south, Menai, as well as the Blue Mountains.

          A comprehensive resource is: http://nobmob.com

For me jumping on my MTB is like being a kid again on my BMX, and so I also go for a fang in parks and for example I can get from Castle Hill to Parramatta[ish] through a series of interconnected parks that either have a bike path (normally populated with somewhat slow moving/reaction and fairly bewildered obstacles that quite often have dogs on leashes) or on the grass. I also ride my MTB on the road, just means a higher cadence in pedalling due to the lower gearing.

        • @jubae g: Cool thanks

      • Its entry MTB spec. There are lesser specs. Deore is the minimum for reliable offroad performance.

        • Deore is the minimum for reliable offroad performance.

          Its easy to be snobby.

Sure, I'd recommend Deore, but millions of people have a lot of "reliable" fun offroad with the Acera/Alivio/Altus (which is which?), and serious bike shops sell them. We are kind of spoiled.

I've seen people ride Tourney hard too, and its the frame or rear axle that breaks before the Shimano drivetrain :-)

      • Shimano takes market segmentation to extreme levels. There are a jazillion price points.

Deore is somewhere in the middle. Some might say the sweet spot of price and quality.
If the rest of the bike is up to the same quality, $499 would be very good, but $1,399 still a total joke.
Should neg the OP for even quoting it. Deceptive.

        • You’re welcome to neg me if it really helps with anything.
It’s not like I set the original price of the item however.

        • @miller0:

Easy, I was using hyperbole. Don't take it literally! Thanks for posting the deal miller.
Anaconda deceptive pricing just cheeses me off.

    • +1

These Anaconda deals are false and misleading.
Show me proof of the actually selling at $1,399

      • +3

Welcome to Australia, where everything is made up and the points don't matter.

  • This is a great price. For anyone looking for a bigger size then it is worth ringing up one of the stores and enquiring. I bought one near the end of last year and at the time their website did not list any in the size I wanted. The first store I rang had the size I wanted in stock.
