[Laptop Repair Enquiry] Dell Outlet

Hi there,
I purchased a dell inspiron laptop for my son in the dell outlet store.
Been a complete disaster - so am on to chat and they ran some diagnostics and want to do an onsite sevrice to replace motherboard, battery cable, dc in port, wireless card and antenna.
I'm no a computer guru, I can manage the basics, but this seems like a joke?
I asked for a replacement but since its a refurb it wont be approved.

Anybody any experience of something like this ?

Thanks all

The vendor has the right to offer you a (free) repair. Customers aren't always entitled to a full product replacement if the issue is minor. Click here to learn more

They're offering to come to you to fix all the problems free of charge which will result in you having a computer at a good price with all new internals, right? What's your issue exactly???

    • Basically everything bar the case and ssd.

Basically the motherboard. There aren't too many pieces in a laptop. What Dell is doing is fine. OP, next time buy a brand new device if you want a replacement.

  • Wow, thats a lot of parts to replace, would think it be cheaper to give you a replacement rather than repair.
So are you posting it to have it repaired or are they sending someone out?

    • Dell usually keeps a stockpile of parts for laptop repairs, and because the customer paid a lower price for a refubished Inspiron, it actually makes financial sense that Dell has chosen to repair the laptop (again) rather ship the customer a new one which could be sold for a much higher price.

e.g a refurbed Dell might cost $500 when a new one is $950, and when the cost of the repair and logistics doesn't cost that much a repair is a better option from their POV.

  • Didn't have any serious problems with laptops bought from their Outlet store. Have bought dozens in the last 10 years. Although, have to admit we prefer the Latitude range.

Wouldnt you prefer they replace everything, than 1 thing at a time, coming back each time, thats why dell has amazing warranty support, you should be happy they are doing that.

btw, from what you listed as needing to be replaced, looks like you had a short, which is what caused multiple devices needing replacement.

  • I got a refurb from Dell and it has had MB, USB and other stuff replaced numerous times in warranty. Out of warranty now and it still has the same problem.

Some tech items are just lemons, like cars - it's a well known phenomenon. I wouldn't buy a refurb again.

Apparently you don't have the same rights to replacement or refund a refurb - correct me if I'm wrong.

  • What does "onsite repair" mean? Are they sending a technician to you?
If so sounds completely fine to me.

If the repair STILL doesn't fix the issue then you could escalate for a replacement or refund.

  • I bought Dell refurb also.It starts having some charging problem in a week.I asked for full refund, and they accept it without any issue. How long before you purchase it?

  • yes, they are sending someone out.
I think this is a lemon - there isn't much more to replace I think.
    Issues started straight away.

Yes, I bought a refurb, but that doesn't mean I have no consumer rights & should be grateful that they decide to deal with me at all!
That said, I believe Dell have super customer service, and is one of the reasons I purchased a Dell, but I am about to find out.

I bought the laptop for my son, its his first laptop and I think it's sensible to buy him something cheap but functional.
Laptops are certainly over priced in Oz!!

    Thanks for all the comments.

I just have to figure out my rights when dealing with a refurb.

    Thanks again!

    • The problem is that you're jumping the gun.

You didnt even let them do the repair yet.

If the repair doesnt work (and chances are it doesnt) then you have the right to behave the way you are now.
