Digital entertainment subscriptions

With the ever-growing market of internet-streamed movies and television series, I"m seeing a rather big change from traditional methods (physical media collection, torrenting etc).

I want to be a part of this change as I will be moving to a new house soon and no longer wish to have our current service (Foxtel) continued after the move.

What are you subscribed to and why? What do you find provides the best value for your media-consumption needs?

Edit: For all the people commenting about free services - I appreciate your input but that wasn't really the point of this thread.

Pirate! Arrrrr Orrrrrrr me NBN craps out at eventide making ye subscriptions not worth the barnacles on me bum! Me hearties.

  • Foxtel Now for me as I like some sort of show playing in the background (so random episodes, even adds, though it does have on demand), but if I wanted something to focus on, I'd probably look at Stan since they seem to have a range of more of the latest shows out. I'm interested in Netflix but I have this thought that it's largely based on Netflix made shows now and I constantly keep hearing about how one show or another is leaving the service.

i try to support the industry by Netflix and YouTube Red free trials, but i'm not sure if it even helps.

I'm subbed to Netflix, Stan & Youtube Red (through Google Music).

Netflix because there were a number of shows i wanted to catch which were Netflix Exclusives…not so much anymore…thinking of leaving once Amazon Prime and Disney are up and running properly as the Netflix content is a tad stale and is getting quite lame now imo.

I signed up to Stan through Amex to claim the 4month free promo…I would have signed up anyway, but that made it a no-brainer….I did this because there were a few classics i wanted to watch again, and torrenting….i dont have time for that anymore. The biggest draw for me was the number of kids shows on Stan…there are much more current shows and variety for my 2yo.

I was always subbed to Spotify, but Optus has Google Music unmetered, and with that came Youtube Red so that was a no-brainer.

Had Foxtel now, na..to expensive for what it is.

  • Optus Yes doco channels - it came 'free' with the cable internet bundle.
netflix - it came with the wife ;)

    • Reality Kings keeps me entertained.

  • I'm actually getting a little bit over the top. I have Netflix - still being charged $11.95 per month, but it's meant to be increasing to $13.95. I also have the basic package with Foxtel $26.00, and I'm paying $7.00 to Fetch for their Docos and Movie Box package. So all up, a bit under $50 per month. From that, I've got loads to watch. I could get rid of Foxtel, but it has a particular show that I adore, that isn't shown anywhere else, and I'd have to access it illegally otherwise. I could get rid of Netflix, but we definitely like having it. The Fetch package is really good, it suits what we want to watch, as well as being a PVR for Free to Air. We enjoy all the things we're subscribed to, we just don't watch them as often as we'd like.

  • I only pay for YouTube Red to get Google Music (no ads on YouTube without needing adblocker is nice too). Everything else I use is free.

Used to have Netflix but dropped it once they started geoblocking and I had to switch from USA's ~5900 titles to Australia's ~1600 titles.

Your poll only allows you to select one option. What if a person uses more than one service?

    • There isn't a setting to allow voting on multiple options.

  • I've used Stan. Wasn't too bad. Not much on it though. I have on a couple of occasions just signed up for the one month free then cancel it and when I want it again I sign up for another trial.

Foxtel Now is quite good. I've had that before.

I currently have Fetch (it's not an option on your poll). It's $6 per month for the Variety pack and it has some very good channels. I mainly watch 13th Street, BBC First, BBC UKTV and Syfy. I can record on the Fetch box and fast forward through the advertisements.

I used the free month of Netflix. Found there wasn't much on it.

  • I subscribe to Netflix, and Amazon (although I might drop that, I really only got it because it's cheap currently), and Spotify for audio (sharing a family package with friends). My wife subscribes to Google Play for music (sharing a family plan with different friends).

I used to pirate everything, but now I find that it's just so much easier to use streaming services. I will admit that, on occasion, I will use Kodi, and I use torrents to get the one sport that I follow. The netflix library seems to be increasing, and they are bringing more original content all the time - so I definitely think it's worth it. No more worrying about sites getting shut down, setting up RSS feeds, DMC notices, and taking care of arrays of hard drives full of stuff.
