Is It Worth Paying $499 for PS4 Pro 1 TB?

Or is it better to wait for some deal?

I have been meaning to buy a console from some time now. Missed many good deals couple of months back at OzB. Now a days I don't see any PS4 pro deals.

Thanks,

DrSL

I'm in the same boat, but no way I'm paying $519! People were posting prices around the $400~ mark. I can wait.

    • BigW has it for $499. Still expensive. So what is the price you are waiting for?

We don't know your financial state - there will always be a better deal down the line, how long are you prepared to wait?

    • I have been waiting from 4-5 months now. Don't mind waiting for another 2-3 months at least. But still it might be hard to pay $499 if the price don't change. I might wait a little more. Or I guess I can check out when they are releasing a newer version of ps4 or ps5 and then the price may come down.

If even they announce the PS5 this year at E3 it wouldn't likely be ready until the end of next year. Given that the One X is having some success as "the most powerful console ever made"…. it is possible that Sony will bring forward their announcement.

In the short term this will have no impact on the standard price of the console, it is already popular and still selling well. You might just need to keep monitoring the site and then jump in at the next deal which includes some games or an extra controller.

        • One X is priced over $600 aud. I'll keep monitoring for some more time. Cheers.

i bought mine last July for $460. I've seen the lowest is $420 standalone. and seen about $470 with games bundled. might need to wait for a little while first half of the year usually does not have a great deals. Closest one would be end of FY.

    • I think I'd buy one for $460. Will try to hold on till EoFY.

I picked one up in the Boxing Day Amazon sale for $379, couple with my credit from some of their launch day pricing errors I got for mid $200ish I think. I also have a regular PS4 Slim. Bought them a couple months apart so can compare. Unless you have a 4K TV then there is absolutely no real reason to go for the Pro. Even then it's not a mind blowing difference. I wouldn't pay much over $400 for one.

Thing is that I got a 4k TV recently and have been restless since to play a 4k hdr game on ps4 pro.

Anyways $400 would be a hard bargain I guess but we never know :)

i have to disagree. meanwhile the difference is not that big for 1080p gaming, there are many advantages for pro. faster loading time, bigger capacity (assume most ps4 will be 500gb), and some games have performance mode on 1080p which allow above 30 fps gaming which are far superior than 30fps. I would say it is worth the upgrade and knowing 4k tv is getting cheaper anyway.

      • Yeah I mean on paper it certainly has all of those advantages. I am just talking about my experiences but I also PC game as well and so a PS4 Pro doesn't meet my expectations on that. Also let's be honest about a couple things. The slim can also do HDR not just the Pro and that I feel is the most noticeable improvement in console experiences in my opinion. Also the Pro's 4K is really only true 4K on the less demanding games, while on the more visually enhanced games is checkerboard 4K which is up-scaled usually from QHD. While an improvement over 1080p yes I find an output matching native resolution will sometimes look more crisp than anything scaled.

        • well in his case, because he is not upgrading from standard ps4, i would say ps4 pro is a better option. but if you have std ps4 and not a buttload of money, not worth the upgrade. but having said that playing games like horizon and AC creed origins really justify the ps4 pro price. it's so good.

    Yes

The PS4 Pro is out of date. It doesn't do 4k (only checkerboard 4k for some games, but it mostly only does 1440p for 99% of titles). I personally wouldn't pay over $400 for it. If you're planing to spend more, keep your standard PS4 (for exclusives) and get an Xbox One X to complement it. The X actually plays games in 4k, plays 4k blurays etc. It's more expensive but you get what you pay for. Compared to the Xbone X, the PS4 Pro is larger and hilariously loud even though it's the less powerful system. Mark Cerny stuffed up with the PS4 Pro.

If you only like Sony systems then I'd wait for the PS4 Pro Slim.

Mate, you are making me think now! Cheers for the advice. I'll definitely think about it.

      • +3

        me too… damn…

    • While I agree with 99% of what you said my Pro is not loud at all. My slim is considerably louder.

      • You scored a good Pro and a very bad Slim (the slims are generally silent). It's not worth playing the Pro system lottery with Sony IMO. 99% of Pro's are currently hilariously loud. My housemate knows when I'm playing mine from the other side of the house. This isn't a unique experience, just check YouTube or any video game forum. The Pro is a 1980s vacuum cleaner that looks like a giant plastic McDonalds Big Mac.

The Xbox One X has expensive cooling and sits silently in hot weather, the Pro screams under strain whilst doing much less.

        • a very bad Slim (the slims are generally silent).

I think you are overstating this

I bought a PS4 Slim in the recent Amazon deal. It's pretty loud, not as loud as what you describe, but in no way can this be called silent. I don't reckon this is a case of 2 anomalies?

I've tried it both in a shelf and out in the open in an air conditioned room too!

Sounds great, have they fixed the red ring of death problem yet?

    • PS4 pro is hardly out of date, it's the latest console from Sony who are killing this console generation.

It's only out of date if you believe in 12 months time the Xbox One X is will be "out of date". It did come out before the one X after all.

I honestly want to get a one X… But there are no games to play! Forza kind of temps me but I know it's not worth it for one game, that non of my mates play anymore anyway, so I'll be over it in a week.

      • You should give it a whirl, even if you only get the XB1S. Forza Horizon 3, Titanfall 2, Cuphead, PUBG… there's quite a few decent exclusives.

    • Just as an addendum to my post, the PS4 Pro beta OS update now supports downsampling. If you don't know what that is, it's a method by which you take a high resolution (just 1440p native in the case of the Pro) and scale it down to a lower resolution. This vastly increases image quality for 1080p TV users. It's what PC gamers have enjoyed for a very long time (and Xbox One X owners as it has done it natively from the start).

So if you're a fanboy or if your game library is already on PS4, then the PS4 Pro is a better option now. I still wouldn't pay more than $400 for a PS4 Pro though (as it only has fake checkerboard 4k and NO 4k bluray support).

I'd be willing to bet that there will be a "slim" revision of the Pro at the end of this year to combat the Xbox One X (likely packaged with Red Dead Redemption 2). The system spec will stay the same (lower than Xbox One X) but it will be smaller, quieter and have 4k bluray support. If you don't have a Pro yet, but want one, I'd recommend that you wait a little bit to maximise your $ (or just buy an X now).

  • Talked to big w today and they said some ps4 pro bundle deals should on sale within the next 2 weeks.

    • Cheers mate. :)

    • Seems like they've changed their mind unfortunately…

      • I got the pro with destiny 2 for $499 anf 5% off that using wishcards. Not the best game or deal. Maybe one will show up for you at the current ebgames ebay sale.

  • I'm honestly surprised at how comfortable Sony is with their market position that you simply can't find any good deals on PS4. I see no reason why one would pay $400 for a standalone PS4 Slim when an XBox One S is going for as low as $299 with 3 games. $500 for the PS4 Pro is just not compelling enough. I've also been waiting since October last year for a $400 bundle on the PS4 Pro. Fingers crossed.

    • At this point, I've waited long enough and will just go for the next generation PS5 console.

      • Hopefully it will be backwards compatible and you could play all the PS4 games as well.

        • One can only hope as this is highly doubtful with Sony's success this generation.

  • According to Whirlpool, there is now a shortage of PS4 pros with Sony AU

    • Yeah, last time I checked no JB Hifi in Victoria has stock.

  • I've also been waiting on a decent ps4 pro deal, expecting something good in the EOFY sales. However, with the current shortage it's not looking good. Even if Sony makes a shitload available, I can't see them discounting. Jbhifi guy told me they have a long list of people waiting for them.
    sigh
