Does Anyone Else Find American Express Travel Credit a Huge Rip off?

It seems when they you get $200 travel credit, it's not actually $200 worth in savings. All the hotels seems overpriced not by a little but a lot.

Case in point, the Sanya Marriott Yalong Bay Resort & Spa is $478 on booking.com while on the American Travel website it's $538.78 for identical rooms. You can see it here:
https://www.hotelscombined.com.au/Hotel/Search?checkin=2018-…
https://travel.americanexpress.com.au/apps/shopping/?search=…

So $200 is not actually $200 in savings rather $55.33.

I had found their price for Venice very competitive

  • But it's not like every hotel site has it advertised at $478… You picked the cheapest to compare, well done

    $478 on booking.com

    I don't see a listing there at $478

Nope the cheapest is 371 if you actually clicked on the link

Absolutely not, when using my qantas travel credit the costs via AMEX Travel were EXACTLY the same as Qantas direct.

Perhaps Hotels Combined has an exclusive rate for that hotel?

    • Hotels combined is a comparison site, if it was the case why is all the booking sites listed cheaper? I also called the hotel directly and they also quoted much lower..

      • Of course, Hotels almost always offer best rate direct.

Like always, no one site has the best price for every hotel. You have to hunt for the good deals.

Last year I got a $500 hotel (everywhere else) for $375 on Amex, and then used my $200 credit.

That's just an example. I've checked for every hotel in macau and sanya on the amex site and they are marked up by about 10-50%

That said you are very lucky to find something actually cheaper on amex! Wish there was an option for me

        As opposed to your example??

  • i paid with the amex credit for a hotel in munich in december, bookings was $725 for 3 nights, amex was $680, so was $480

    • A lucky ducky you are!

Out of the many possible combinations, choose one and bag the crap out of the company.

    Righto

I'm raising awareness that amex charge exorbitant rates on their travel site which people which is the only way to redeem their travel credit. They pay $195 in annual fees for the privilege.

What have you done lately to benefit the ozbargain community?

      • +2

Not making ozbargain into ozwhingeing. You're welcome

      • I think you are looking at it wrong. You pay the annual fee so you can have the credit card. The travel credit is a bonus you get you with this card (as well as some others) to offset the fee paid.

If you can get a hotel for close to what it normally goes for, as well as get a credit towards the cost of the hotel, you are coming out ahead.

  • In short; no.

Only gripe with the travel credit is that you cannot combine multiple travel credits into one booking.
