Silent Mechanical Keyboard

Hi,

Can someone recommend a silent mechanical keyboard for office use please.

No used for gaming so extra features aren't required.

Edit- Logitech G610 Cherry Red? The Cherry Red is suppose to be quiet, but I've read there is a Cherry Red Silent but not sure which KB has them.

  • i've got the Logitech G910 and it is awesome for office use. Just as noisy other office keyboards but great to type on.

    • Draws too much attention from staff members when the RGB are on. I'm in a shared office space and too also use the g910. But the G910 programmable g keys are grate for application shortcuts and text templates.

      • Yeah people are keen to see the "fancy" keyboard! the programmable keys have been awesome for running macros!

      • Draws too much attention from staff members when the RGB are on.

        Seriously?

        • They are attracted to the light! lol

    • I saw the G910 and it's a little too much in terms of looks, I prefer a simple KB.

Something like my G710+ is acceptable for looks.

  • i just a cherry mx blue at work
    its awesome

    • I have the 710+ with cherry mx brown and it's pretty loud. Trying to get a 'silent' keyboard.

I read the blue is louder than the browns.

      • blue is the loudest cherry mx switch there is (and will annoy your colleagues), but also generally the nicest to type on.

      • Buy some O-rings for it. $1 from China or $5ish locally. The sound you hear is the keys bottoming out. The o-rings will dampen when you type too hard and hit the bottom. Makes a reasonable difference.

Buying a new board won't do much. Though some of the more premium boards are a bit quieter as they are built from more solid materials.

All of these "silent switches" etc are just marketing and offer minimal improvement. As long as you stay away from blue or equivalent clicky switches and combine with o-rings you will be fine.

E.g. I just bought an iKBC f108 RGB mx brown, it is much more silent than my other 2 boards. Also comes in 87 key format, and I believe you can get non-rgb or at least single-colour LED. Very nice board for the price.

        • I just checked and my G710+ (MX brown) has o-rings already and is still louder than I would like.

Did your KB come with o-ring from the factory?

        • @JB1: That is quite unusual that it came with O-rings. Just looked it up and seems that is the case.

You could look into getting MX black or something that has a heavier actuation force. Brown is only 45g or there abouts, which is quite light. If it is heavier, there is less chance of you bottoming out the keystrokes.

Overall though, you are never going to get it as quiet as a membrane keyboard. I personally use an MX brown with O-rings at work (max keyboard nighthawk x8) and it is quiet enough that i've had no complaints from coworkers. I would say it is louder than most newer membrane keyboards, and about the same as some older ones going around.

The keyboard I have at home (iKBC f108 brown) without O-rings is basically just as quiet as my work keyboard with o-rings. So it all comes down to the make of the board, what materials they used, and keycaps.

For what it's worth, I'm not an expert.

        • @brezzo:

I've never even thought about o-rings until you mentioned it and was curious so pulled out a key!

It's certainly not that loud, but the office wants a quieter keyboard so clients don't hear us tapping away if we're on the phone.

    • a good way to annoy your colleagues

  • I have the Corsair Strafe RGB with Cherry MX Silent switches.
They are a bit quieter than all the other mechanical options, but not silent. Just unobtrusive.
It comes with a wrist pad, and if you do not load up the software, will not look like something off the Vegas Strip.

    • Thanks, no need for any lights or shortcut keys other than the windows key.

  • I bought this one recently. It works well and only 7 days delivery from the USA.

    • Looks like a nice business keyboard.

      loud?

      • +1

It has a quiet click that you can hear if you press slowly. The main noise is the keys hitting bottom. It's a short keystroke. It's not necessary to hit bottom but I pound the keyboard anyhow. I'll get over that one day. The keyboard has lighting which can be adjusted to any level from full off to full on. There are some built in wanky wave sequences to the lighting but I turned that off very quickly. The lighting colour is very pale blue, almost white. IMHO it's a good colour.

One of the reasons I bought this one is that it doesn't take a lot of desk space. It does not have the numeric keypad.

        • numeric keypad and it would have been perfect!!

  • I think it was $175 at MSY - its this one http://www.corsair.com/en-us/strafe-rgb-mechanical-gaming-ke…
The switches are quieter than any other mech keyboard I have used.

    • +1

Have this one and bought from MSY for that price a month ago. Great keyboard, no problems, great price. But if you are a hard typer it does get loud, not as loud as cherry mx though.

  • following this

  • May I ask why mechanical? I think you're better off using a good normal keyboard like Microsoft sculpt for office use.

If you are forced to choose a switch for the sound rather than the feel then I feel like that is kind of a moot point. Unless an aesthetics thing
