Surface Laptop Won't Display on TV When Connected Using a Mini-Display Port to HDMI Cable

I've been trying to get my Surface Laptop to display on my TV. It's not the cable because I've tested my X1 Carbon with it and it works properly.

When I plug the cable into the laptop it doesn't display anything on the TV and will sometimes say "Invalid Format". I've tried another TV and it displays if I change the resolution but doesn't show up correctly. It will show half on the TV and half off to side.

Does anyone know what the heck is going on?

I've tried different combinations of scaling and resolution and doesn't work!

  • can you confirm that you are using mini hdmi connector on the Surface Pro which terminates in a HDMI female connector, then another hdmi male to male cable to connect to your tvs hdmi port?

    • They are all the same cable, and it is what you should be using.

  • Any other suggestions since that doesn't work?

  • 1 - Check display settings on your PC and see if it detects an external monitor.Check resolution on external monitor and ensure it is the same as Native res on TV
2 - Change HDMI ports on TV and also select corresponding port on TV menu.
3 - If no "da dum" noise/monitor detection, restart PC and leave it connected and see if it makes a connection.

How old is the TV? I would assume it is at least FHD?

    Cheers

  • Ended up getting a Chromecast 2 and works perfect.

I assume had something to do with the TV(s) being a bit old and the laptop having differing resolutions to it.

    Thanks all for the assistance!
