White List for Cashrewards / Givingassistant etc to Use in Pihole

Hi,

I'd like to use pihole which is a network wide adblocker but I still want to use cashrewards etc. Is anyone doing this? Is it difficult to whitelist the required hosts for cash back sites?

Thanks

  • Cashrewards and other cashback sites rely on ad-server of the affiliate network sites to register a cookie on your browser to track the purchases. Pi-hole likely would have blocked those ad-servers on the DNS level so I do not think it's going to work.

    • Some cashback sites provide a whitelist. I am guessing the UK one wouldn't cut it for Australia.

      • That whitelist is for Adblock Plus specifically, and yes it whitelists those ad-servers which you might only want to do temporarily. Not too sure how Pi-hole's interface works, but it might also have a function to turn on/off a subset of rules temporarily (although the effect would be network-wide rather than just your browser).

I agree that cashback sites might want to provide a whitelist like that. However with dynamic nature of ad-servers these days, that list might need to be updated often.

        • I had a play around with the whitelist, its very easy to whilelist hosts the only problem I noticed is it takes a long time for pihole to clear its own cache. Running ipconfig /flushdns didn't help so its not on the windows side.

Found an easy solution with a quick dns switcher for when I use cashback.

  • I've noticed the same issue. I've tried to whitelist some sites but it doesn't necessarily enact the whitelists straight away.

Pihole does has a temporary disable feature, however it only seems to work if you enact it before the website gets blocked. Otherwise the block seems to get cached.

Safest method is to set DNS to 8.8.8.8, then ipconfig /flushdns
