New Fridge - Costco Membership

Hi Fellow Ozbargainers …….. my 3 year old Westinghouse refrigerator has died. I got it in replacement of a faulty hisense fridge. I finally ended up paying $599 for the 240 litre Westinghouse fridge. I was thinking of buying a new fridge from Costco if they sell any. My query was is it worth to get Costco membership just to buy a fridge?? I also want to buy a hepa filter vacuum cleaner. So if I save a bit through Costco my membership would be free and I can buy even my groceries for the year through Costco.

does this sound like a good plan??

Regards,
TH

my 3 year old Westinghouse refrigerator has died.

No more warranty? I'd be pretty pissed if my fridge died in just 3 years!

    • I agree. 3 years is not the acceptable amount of time a fridge should last. You can try talking to the retailer (Or Westinghouse) and mention ACCC and see how it goes.

      • Three years is reasonable for a $600 fridge. It would be different for a $1200 or $1800 fridge.

Three years is reasonable for a $600 fridge

What? Since when was it reasonable for a fridge, regardless of price, to only last 3 years??

I had a $300 fridge that lasted 4 years and then passed it to a friend who's used it for business for the last 3 years.

I normally would expect whitegood applicances to last at least 5 years of constant usage.

        • @bobbified:

The legislation doesn't state a minimum nor a maximum timeframe for statutory guarantees.

The manufacturer provided a two year guarantee on this item. Any remedies provided outside of this period is goodwill and good customer service.

        • @whooah1979:
          You're right about the warranty.

I'm just saying that I (and probably most people) expect a fridge to last longer than just 3 years. Many things last way longer than just the warranty period and fridges are usually one of those things.

$599 for the 240 litre Westinghouse fridge.

was it full of imported beer?

get a fridge of gumtree or facebook marketplace.

    • I just checked the same model online. its only 200lt. may be I was not knowing about checking for deals then. I bought the one which I thought was better from the shop then. now with ozbargain I am getting a bit better at checking for deals before buying anything :)

Costco membership pays for itself in discounts.

  • I think it will be cheaper from ebay when they have those 20% off sales.

  • You may end up spending more money in general in a week if you have Costco membership and goes there regularly.

  • I was looking for a refrigerator in December and I found Costco very limited in choice and in fact expensive. The same model was cheaper outside (I compared online) maybe because of deals in December. I ended up spending half a day at Harvey Norman going through a ton of available options and finding the perfect one for our house and paid for it using coles MasterCard with insurance. Just after boxing day, there was $200 further discount on that model and we got that from insurance.

In short, go with someone who has a Costco membership and check the limited options they have for the refrigerators. If you find one to your liking, check the price online and decide if it's worth getting the membership. Also, for big purchases like this, I would recommend coles MasterCard(soon to be Citi)

    • I have coles MasterCard but never took insurance from it. I always use amex for any purchases wherever amex is not accepted then I use Coles MasterCard

  • You can join costco and see if you want it, if not you can get refund of the membership.

  • Costco is a bit of drive from my house so I won't be visiting Costco often. Costco also offers family members card so I can get another card for my brother and we can share the membership costs.

my fridge is working in the freezer part intact it is creating lot of ice in freezer but no cooling in the fridge. the coils that take the cooling to the fridge would be clogged and frosty. I need to open the fridge and clean the area which takes the cooling to the fridge. so I doubt if Westinghouse or the retailer would help me with it. and I am looking to upgrade the fridge.

You won't believe I have always observed that sometimes in the house electronics Start to break all of a sudden. now my vacuum also broke. 3 years back it was fridge, laptop and microwave.

I got one from gumtree a small bar fridge till I check a new good fridge deal. Unfortunately amex is also not coming up a Harvey Norman offer.

I have a WH fridge that did this same thing…
Easy fixed… disconnect from power.. empty out the freezer compartment and remove the bottom cover. In there you will see that it has become a solid sheet of ice. Do not chip away at this!! Let it melt or run a hair dryer on it until the area is clear.
Then check the drain hole which is usually in the back corner… you will find that it is blocked by something.. if nothing is visible then blow some compressed air through the drain hole.
When the water is unable to escape it freezes and blocks the flow of cold air to the refrigerator part and thus a very cold freezer and a warm refrigerator.

      • yes …. I switched off the power of the fridge for 2 days and then started the fridge and lo it started to function again ….

Normally there's a defrost heating element inside the freezer. Every 12 or 24 hours on a timer the refrigeration stops and the defrost element activates for a short time (around 5 minutes) and melts the frost around the coils. There's also a thermal sensor that cuts off out the heater to prevent your food defrosting.

I suggest you take @xywolap's suggestion and see if the defrost water drain is blocked. If the drain is clear and the problem recurs you may have a fault defrost header or a faulty timer or a faulty thermal sensor.

I doubt if Westinghouse or the retailer would help me with it.

Why would you say that, before you've spoken to them? If the fridge is faulty and under warranty they should repair it for you.

If the fridge in costco is $60 less than the best price you can get elsewhere, then YES its worth it!

If you go during the week, you can get a guest pass, that allows you to look at the prices but not buy. So you can go in and see what the prices are, if you think its worth it. Then go sign up

  • In Costco/ eBay prices are fixed. Usually I get a better deal from good guys as you can negotiate the prices a lot.

Costco at auburn only has big fridges, double doors and from samsung.
I've never found electricals to be cheaper at costco unless they are running a "instant coupon" sale at the time. Their everyday price, while cheap, is not as cheap as what you can find when buying from David jones price match while paying with 10% off entertainment gift cards. David Jones is the best due to price matching and 10% gift cards. If I were you I'd find a model that DJ sells then find the cheapest and get them to match while paying with giftcard.
