Looking for a laptop that has good battery life >7 hours like a Mac

Any ideas of pc's that have decent battery life like the macs?

  • Dell released a Latitude laptop with a claimed 19-hour battery life two years ago:

Vaios have good battery life too, e.g. the Y series is rated at up to 9 hours and doesn't weigh a lot.

If you don't need something powerful, the Vaio X can do 12-14 real hours on its extended battery at 1.2kg. You do pay for the size/weight though!

    • yes but those are on idle, for normail work(ms word) it can decrease by 20%

yes, that's why i said "claimed".

The Vaio X is rated by Sony for 16 hours, I said 12-14 hours above as reported by a reviewer who used it for blogging during his review.

  • What's wrong with a Mac?
You can install windows on it if you want!
Apple Refurb store has them "cheap".

thanks to apple's marketing, they actually look a bit wanky to me. Too many people use apple products to pose in public rather than to get work done.

It's a bit like buying Bose speakers. ;)

      • Sorry I'm ROFL - Doh so if they are that stupid then what are you?? If it suits you what the hell if others are wankers. Be different be somebody, hey a Mac user who actually uses their computer in public. But then again, maybe they can pose because the battery lets them rather than having their computer turned off.

Then again we can go further, if you bought a Mac you'd probably fry your testicles, as you would be using it on your lap too often, and without testicles you wouldn't be a wanker….

        • "Too many" is not the same as "every single one".

You can't disagree there are people who buy apple products for the brand name and associated image. Apple market themselves as a premium brand, like an expensive watch. That cannot be denied either.

          Are you an apple user?

        • ??? I really cant understand your logic. I was just saying that in itself is wanky.

Not buying because it doesnt suit you makes sense but because others dont use it like you think they should is a little starnge

Yep we have in the family an Iphone, Nokia a PC DeskTop, A Toshiba Laptop a Toyota, Commodore, HP Printer, Reebok shoes, Vodafone and Rivers, BOSE speakers, rivers underpants and heaven forbid a Mac

Which of these qualify as wanky besides the Mac. So I can dump them right away?? LOL

BTW I also cant fathom what you mean with the "every single one" comment - I never said or inferred that

Wow, calm down. I seem to have hit a raw nerve somewhere.

What I'm saying is that some people buy Apple products simply because they are apple products. They get something from being seen with them. Apple position themselves as a premium brand, hence the whole image thing.

          Do you disagree with that?

Is there something wrong with me voicing my opinion that because of those people I mentioned above, I therefore think apple products have a bit of a wanky image? I never implied "therefore, every apple user is wanky".

It's a bit like BMWs. BMWs have had a yuppie image for ages. It doesn't mean every BMW owner is a yuppie, but the brand itself carries the image.

For some reason you seem to have totally exploded over me voicing those opinions. Discussions are easier when both sides are calm.

I use a PC, and I don't get annoyed when people say PC users are geeky, because I know that there are many PC users who are geeks.

I've bought a whole bunch of ipods myself. ipods themselves have an image of their own, but I know that it doesn't mean every ipod user is that type of person.

The "every single one" comment was because I thought that you thought that I meant every single apple user is wanky, judging from the explosive, aggressive nature of your reply. Replies like that usually come from people who are "burned" by the comment they're replying to.

      • calm down???
        Raw nerve??
        Upset??
        Exploded??
        Aggresive??

        I originally included the comment

ROFL = Rolling on Floor Laughing

Traditional e speak for I think this is funny or I am not serious. Funnier than just LOL (Laughing out Loud)

see here for even more detailed definitions

Maybe I should have spelt it out more. I found it funny NOT upsetting, if anything I should have got up off the floor. So your calming down comment might be true in the sense of the jocular…

Sorry you misread my intentions and my words. Maybe I should have put a few more winks, smilies and ROFLMAO (see link above)

I'll retire to my train seat and just watch a few posers cook their testicles with their over hot Macca's coffee and wink more at the chick's getting on and off.

Your sacarstic tone is passive-aggressive. That's not being calm. I wouldn't call the first line in your first reply calm either:

Doh so if they are that stupid then what are you?? If it suits you what the hell if others are wankers.

Little things like this aren't worth getting all worked up over. There's space in this world for two different opinions without having to passive-aggresively attack others. We've gone waaaaaay off topic anyway, the OP was asking for PCs.

  • I have this: ASUS UL30JT

switchable graphics card, <10 hrs battery life. (i've gotten around 8 hrs usually).

seriously, macs are overrated. the only good thing about them is their case, and their mousepad.

    check it out!

  • I'm sorta with OzPete..
You've found the product that has the features that you want… Buy It!

Not wanting to buy something that suits your needs because you don't want to look like a poser, makes you sound wanky and insecure about yourself.
Buy the Mac, stick Windows on it if you want, and use it. You know why you bought the machine, who cares what anyone else thinks!

Ditto for the Stigma surrounding VAIO's… Very similar to the stigma around Macs!

    • Sure, that's another way to look at it. One other way is that a person is insecure about themselves, so they need to buy a device that'll make them part of the "in thing" at the moment.

The difference between a vaio and mac is, only tech-minded users know about the stigma behind vaios. The general public don't see the same crazy hype over vaios, so there's no "status symbol" behind vaios as there is with macs, which is exactly what apple wants.

      • What's the stigma behind vaios?

        • It might vary, but the one i know is that they can be quite expensive, so some techy people see vaio users as people who buy blindly based on looks alone. You get less spec and more name/design for a higher price.

The stigma isn't like the apple one… this one is something like us ozbargainers laughing at people who buy things at full price from harvey norman.

When the Vaio P and X laptops (netbooks really) came out, everyone laughed at the ridiculous price. It was expensive, but there wasn't (and still isn't) an equivalent model by any other manufacturer. They had an amazing design (594 grams, 1600x768 display on the P, 655 grams, 1366x768 display on the X, very long batt life with the extended batt on the X).

Of course, the smarter ones just buy them online for less money. :)
