Recommend me a USB-C Dock?

Hey OzBargain,

My partner is planning on getting a Galaxy Book 12" for uni and as such will probably require a USB-C dock.

It'll need USB-A, HDMI and USB-C power pass through… Could you recommend one?

Thanks

    Do you mean USB-A ?

I'd recommend anything by Satechi. The quality is excellent and it looks good.

I've seen people use this del one. Benefit being it fits nicely in their pocket when walking to meetings at work.

Doesn't get the best reviews though.

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro. I have one like this and honestly only ever use the HDMI capability. SD and micro SD capability are occasionally useful though.

I don't think I'd use my USB-A ports ever. Everything is online at uni and most give you several TBs of One Drive or Google Drive storage as part of your student email. You can access that just fine on Uni computers.

You never share large files from a friend or colleague on a thumb drive?

Nope. Many organisations don't allow thumb drives for security reasons.

Like I said. OneDrive or google drive is becoming the norm. You can files of several GB on.

For her use case as a teacher the satechi or similar would be perfect.

I'd STRONGLY recommend her to use online cloud drive not external drives for uni work.

"Here is this awesome movie, oh, hang on, I'll just upload it on my dsl. It will only take 30mins or so. Then you can download it, I'll give you the link."

I think you might be overestimating the median internet speed in Australia, and the number of places that allow usb drives is vastly higher than the places that have high speed internet.
By all means use the cloud as one of your backups, but using it to the exclusion of sneakernet is as silly as if I said the cloud is always wrong because there are some places with poor connectivity.

    • Yeah, I think I do mean USB-A.

Just don't want all the current peripherals to stop working, you know? No need to buy new external drives. Maybe in another 5 years everything will be USB-C and it won't be needed anymore. But right now I think we still do! HDMI is useful as she's studying to be a teacher and most schools use HDMI input. She'll also want to connect the device to a monitor at home to get a larger screen.

      Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I have one of these which seems to fit your description perfectly. However my XPS 13 reports that it is 'charging slowly' and it seems to be limited to 30W pass through (whereas I want 45W)

And I was looking today for something to do DP 4K @ 60Hz and decided to try out this xiaomi for $50.

    • Thanks, I'll pass on the recommendation. I think she may have been looking for some extra USBs though..
