Adobe and Microsoft Software for Students

Have a son off to UNSW and am trying to find best value options for equipping him with Windows-based Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud software.

At High School, they have free versions of this software, but I'm unclear on whether these licenses expire after 12 months, or if they can be used for the lifetime of the hardware they are on.

If you're a student or parent in the same situation, what have you opted for? More than happy for suggestions on Apple/Linux options, but our need is specifically for Windows 10.

He will be behind his peers in life skills if he doesnt start researching these things himself…

Nice, wasn't aware of the office deal.

      Agree on 2nd. Sigh.

ask him to join ozb for life skill training

  • Current students can get a copy of Office for free, according to this: https://student.unsw.edu.au/notices/office

But I think the license will expire after your son graduates - not sure about this though.

    • Yeah it expires once you leave UNSW. There are plenty of friends working in an environment where they have access to the home user program and could ask for a spare office ProPlus licence key. As for Adobe stuff, wait for a 20% off sale at bing Lee/officeworks/etc and get a perpetual copy of Adobe Acrobat DC, it’s well worth the $125 odd even if the other software included in CC aren’t used anymore.

Im pretty sure the NSW DEC high schools licensing agreement for Adobe CC is a 12 month licence that had to be renewed but the office key is perpetual.

  • If your school offers the Microsoft Dream Spark Program, then you can get all Microsoft Services for free. This includes Windows 10 Pro, Office Pro and Windows Server as well as SQL. If your school does not offer this. Then you can just use the edu email to get a student account. However once you finish year 12 the subscription will end. But you can use your university email to re register.

For Adobe CC, you will receive a folder containing all the packages. The license key will be revoked after you have finished year 12.

TL;DR It is not life time. But you can use your university email after year 12.

  • THis has more software:

Adobe isn't listed, but likely UNSQ has an on-site agreement. Sometimes this extends to students. Weird they wouldn't list it, but maybe send an email to IT on that above link and ask.

    • Acrobat X Pro used to be on all UNSW student computers, but now only the labs have Acrobat ie library computers just come with Adobe Reader.
