Winamp - It Used to Whip The Llama's Ass (Now Runs in a Browser)

https://jordaneldredge.com/projects/winamp2-js/

Do you remember the days of Winamp? Of course you don't, you're all obsessed with streaming free music from Spotify / Youtube nowadays. But just in case you still have those Mp3's on your PC, this web-app based version of Winamp will let you play those forgotten Nickelback albums that you've stowed away in the deep dark recesses of your mechanical hard drives.

    Winamp was awesome! We remember.

I remember… Cutting edge back in the day… two decades ago.

  • I always go back to Winamp for those obscure file formats that nothing else can use.

    • +3

      thats what vlc is for

      • There are a few out there that not even VLC can handle.

          Such as "ronswanson.clear"?

        • +4

@MathNerd: Duke Silver in .clear format.

          @Clear: Well played

winamp and the awesome skins you could put on it.
    those were the days

    I'm using Winamp right now.
I was listening to a streaming service but my (Optus) internet was cutting out so I resorted to offline music.

The web browser version doesn't seem to be compatible with the Modern skin.
It doesn't scale well, looks very small on my screen and looks distorted and still small when zooming in through the browser.
Doesn't have an option to load Plugins either. (I recommend using the Enhancer plugin)
    Basically it's useless.

And forget MP3s in this day and age, the quality isn't worth it. Why choose an inferior quality when lossless is so viable.

fondly remembered for those funky music visualiser
back when Aust based mp3 sharing sites were still freely out in the open
    VLC killed the llama's ass

  • Of course remember. I have plenty of it's skins… Some make it looks like aliens

    • With boobs
      amirite?

  • I have zero music files on my computer now, I stream everything now.

    • Yeah try to stream when you are travelling on Sydney train. Sounds like broken radio

      • +2

You can pre-download the music on most steaming apps, and same with YouTube.

        • +2

But that puts music files on your computer…

        • @terrys:

          No, it doesn't

        • @Drew22: It's called a cache.

        • @terrys:
So an app on my phone caches things on my computer?

          Riiiight.

        • @Drew22: Your phone is a computer…

        • @terrys:

Yeah, and so is my microwave, my tv, my fridge, my oven, hell even my kettle is a computer.

"Yeah bro, I'll call you on your portable pocket hand computer"
          Said no one.

        • @Drew22: My reply had relevance. The statement you were replying to was "Yeah try to stream when you ..". You response was " You can pre-download the music.."
Downloading music to a phone, laptop ect is "putting music on your computer". That may not be how you would describe it, however one thing it is not, is "streaming".
cf: Non sequitur. It's English, regardless of what any random Roman will tell you, as the plural is "non sequiturs". Were it still Latin, it would be "non sequuntur", tho to be fair it is the non-following party that is plural rather than the 'followings' themselves.
Thank you for a lovely evening.

        • @terrys:

You must be fun at parties.

When most people talk about having "files" on their "computer" they are probably talking about mp3s or videos, that aren't cache.

  • Fun, i did crash it though :(

tbh the few times i play an mp3 i just throw it into vlc or smplayer

I remember Winamp and MilkDrop 2 plugin. That was mind-blowing.

Has this been tested on Netscape Navigator in full nostalgia mode?

I still use Winamp 2.95. It's the first program that gets transferred to every new PC that I build. There isn't a superior, lighter MP3/FLAC/Anything player. Streaming audio is for peasants and the common man who don't value audio quality or media ownership.

since i changed to foobar2k i never looked back, but winamp was revolutionary at the time.

Still use it every day at work. I tried a few other players but for me it still "Whips The Llama's Ass". I love its simplicity and the lack of bells and whistles.

I use MusicBee, which is a free WinAmp clone and is v good

  • Good old WinAmp. I used to run it with two plugins for pitch control and compressor/gain control.

Remember the dancing baby plugin? You can still see it on YouTube. Was all the rage back then.

Now I just use VLC for every type of media file or VirtualDJ when I'm in the mood for beatmixing.

  • Plex have made a lightweight winamp inspired replacement

  • Which other player has visualisations which equal or surpass those available in Winamp?
