Purchasing Tickets on Gumtree

Hi all I’m wanting to purchase some tickets to an upcoming sporting event in what is mostly sold out (except for GA standing tickets). There are a few for sale on gumtree and I’ve selected some that seem great and the seller appears genuine. Is there any way at all I can safeguard my purchase and make sure they are genuine and also make sure I am the only holder or the tickets? Any advice or positive/negative experiences on purchasing tickets from resale platforms would be appreciated!

yes Pay via PayPal if they refuse tell them you will pay an extra $2 for the PayPal fees,if they still refuse then it is up to you whether you purchase the tickets,if you pay via credit card or debit card and get ripped off your bank may only may help you, good luck

    • If I pay with PayPal and the event isn’t for 10 weeks and I realise then they were fraudulent could I still get a refund?

You have 180 days to file a dispute so if they're physical tickets you might be able to argue your case. Digital, sent via email, etc. not a chance.

To be honest, if its a 'print at home' ticket you're buying, you can't really be sure they only sold one copy and its a first to scan on the day gets in, the rest get an already used error when trying to enter.

    • THats exactly what I worry about - surely this has happened so many times? I wonder if these ticketing agencies have done anything to stop this type of thing?

      • Yeah, they have said you're not allowed to sell tickets like this.

Hi jeffgee, best to contact paypal—1800 073 263 - 6am to 10pm mon-fri—8am to 7pm saturday-sunday all australia time, best i could see was up to 180 days after purchase, still contact them as it may differ for the pre purchase of tickets etc,

    • Thanks very much I’ll do that and I’ll call ticketek too to see what policies they have with resale

As per Ticketek and Ticketmaster, resale of tickets through a platform other than theirs is against their terms & conditions and they reserve the right to cancel any tickets they can identify as being resold.

I've bought tickets on Gumtree, and also (for lack of a better word) scalped tickets a few years ago.

When buying, I had no issues. Seller seemed genuine, so I was happy to purchase.

On the flip side, when selling, the purchaser actually lost the tickets I sold them. It was extremely easy to reissue the tickets, as I was the purchaser, making the original tickets void.

It wouldn't take much for a dodgy individual to reissue the tickets upon selling them to you. And you won't know until game night.

I'd suggest getting the names on the tickets changed, if possible.

It sounds incredibly risky but if you decide to go ahead with it, also buy genuine standing area general admission tickets as an insurance policy so you at least get to see something.

that’s a great idea. Then I could possibly head over to seated area with my tickets and ask how they obtained theirs?

  • what is mostly sold out

So buy official tickets that aren't sold out. If they're the expensive ones, pay the money. At least you know you'll get to your game.

    • No what’s left is general admission standing tickets. You can only buy one per transaction also.

      • I'd still do 5x transactions for those official tickets than risk fake tickets.
