Building a Computer with eBay 20% from Futu Online

I saw some awesome pre-built computers but I already have a decent GPU (Vega 56), so I didn't want to get one included just to sell after. Here is my build:

Core i7 8700 $509
MSI Z370M Mortar mATX $209
Corsair Vengenance LPX 16GB 3200 MHz $375 (mental)
Crucial MX500 250GB SSD $149
Corsair CS Series 650W 80 Plus Gold $119
In Win 301 mATX Case $105
LG 24x DVD Writer $25
No OS $0
No Peripherals $0

$1491.00
-20%
$1192.80

Any thoughts on the build since I will be using Oculus Rift and a 3440 x 1440 monitor for work and gaming?
Is there a prebuilt on this eBay sale that is better like the Dell?

Thanks

    LG 24x DVD Writer

    Lol why?

Build sounds ok, I built one with a i7 7700k this time last year, all from futu as well.

    • I know, I know. I just have family members that want family videos burnt to DVD so they can watch them as a DVD movie. If you know anything about computers suddenly you are also a movie editor.

  • Is it still that only the K model CPUs are unlocked? If so don't need a Z series motherboard.

    • Z series are the only chipset released for 8th gen at the moment you have no choice unfortunately.

shoppingexpress had some cheap z370 boards for less than $200 FYI.

      • Thanks for this but I didn't see any better priced motherboards from Shopping Express eBay.

If I alreafy have a higher priced motherboard, would you reckon its worth spending $105 to get a 8700k which is about 10% faster? Not best bang for buck, but it might mean I get 5 years out of instead of 4 right?

jump on whirlpool forums under desktop and check the builds / copy those. plenty of comments and great builds.

i'd personally steer clear from MSI boards and also if you did want to go the overclocking route spend another 60-70 and get a board with more power phases / better quality components.

        • If you get a K you will need to buy an after market cooler I believe.

        • @jiberz: Only if I overclock correct? You still get the higher base rate of 3.7Ghz vs 3.2Ghz and at some point in the future I can get a better cooling system when I go to overclock a year or two later and get that additional boost then.

        • @alexthebargainman: I'd look at overclocking in the future, I am happy to overclock but at base the 8700k is pretty fast and I can buy better cooling later.

So MSI is no good? Cheers. The motherboard I listed was a MicroATX and was reviewed quite highly I thought. That and it was cheap is why I picked it.

I know there are better motherboards for overclocking, but I was thinking a little overclock would probably be fine. Some people overclock to 5.3Ghz but going to 4.8Ghz is still a great boost that wouldn't require $100's more in better equipment, so that was supposed to be a good bang for buck option.

My current CPU is overclocked 50%, so I am familiar with the process, I just now think the $ to go from 4.8Ghz to 5.3Ghz is a couple of hundred of dollars for 10% extra performance (4.8Ghz + 10% = 5.28Ghz) isn't worth it. Though I did enjoy the process when I got it setup a few years back.

@FabMan: No in the past when I purchased a K model they didn't give a stock cooler in the box because they expect you to get an after market one if you are going to overclock.

        • @jiberz: Thank you. Never bought a K before, I'll keep an eyeball on that.
