New Dell laptop

Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop and leaning towards one of the following dells whilst the 20% ebay promo is on offer.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/332435673590
Is it easy to install additional Ram or adding an extra SSD in this laptop? Is it literally just buying the Ram then sticking into the machine?

Is it possible to purchase a separate Gpu and installing it? Not really keen on the 940MX

Cheers

    into a USB port? no

on a more serious note, yes RAM is upgradeable just make sure you get the right one.

no. that's not the way a laptop works.

if you want an upgradeable GPU, get a desktop. Or, look for a laptop that has the specific one you're looking for

  • if you try to change anything in laptop you will void warranty and as easy things seem they arent that easy you can install additional ram but it has to match previous rams and most of the times there is no spare slot left in laptop ssd can be used to replace either hard drive or dvd drive gpu installation is a big no unless you know what you are doing if you want to do experiments better to go for used laptop and do your upgrades

    • would it kill you to use some punctuation?

Provide info specific to the OP - your misleading information isn't helping anyone here.

      1. This laptop has 2 RAM slots (not built in as you suggest).
      2. The back cover has literally one screw.
      • most of the manufacturers void warranty even if one screw is opened
i never suggested built in simple words if there are 2 slots mostly manufacturer use 2 8 gb rams
and sorry for using a bit of geek language ;)

        • most of the manufacturers void warranty even if one screw is opened

That would have been a useful comment instead of all that rubbish you wrote earlier.

All I'm saying is, try to help the OP in his/her specific situation instead of rambling on.

@steff: no need to be rude if you cant understand my explanation sorry for that i addressed ops all 3 issues in a whole sentence i think OP got what i meant and you didnt

@awaischb: you call what I said being rude? Here, have a smiley face :)

        • @steff: lol

  • Upgrading ram looks like a fairly easy task as there is a spare slot on the board of that model. Newer ultrabook thin models (like the macbook) have the ram soldered to the board so is impossible to upgrade. Upgrading the SSD is also fairly easy but you may be limited to the NVME m2 form factor. Upgrading the GPU afterwards is not possible so make sure you buy the one that you want.

  • Thanks for your help guys, I know which Laptop I'll be buying tonight :)

    • let us know as well so we could know what was on your mind ;)

      • The winner is laptop #1. Don't think the 940MX is good enough, everything else on that laptop would be perfect though

        • thats true good luck
