Porting from a Optus MVNO to Optus

So, I tried porting a number to from Ovo to Optus today. It has taken an entire day and the issue has not been resolved, it has been escalated and will take another 24 hours. WTF? Ovo is a reseller of Optus and I would expect porting to Optus themselves should take a shorter time than to another carrier.

I had the same issue porting a number to Optus maybe 1 or 2 years ago previously and I chalked it down to bad luck, but twice where Optus is the common denominator? What is going on? Really bad luck or is Optus just sh*t?

Porting from a Optus MVNO to Optus

    Yeah, don't do that.

    Ever.

+1 port to another carrier off a $2 SIM and port back. Be prepared for Optus to stuff you around tho. Tonnes of people claim their activations process is an ordeal.

    • This is still too often to engage in such reckless behaviour.. lol

  • I actually think it's getting worse, not better.

I used to imagine 2-3 days was as bad as it can get. I thought I was just unlucky.

But then I ported from Ovo to Amaysim last year and waited 5 days thanks to the weekend.

Now I've read horror stories even when porting to Vodafone and Telstra MVNOs so even with free SIMs lying around I'm sitting on Amaysim. They won. I am defeated.

  • Optus is hopeless, telstra and voda do it in a few hours.

  • Really bad luck or is Optus just sh*t?

The latter. Also don't try Coles <-> Optus, it won't work because Coles IS Optus. At least that will fail before you have to suffer much.

  • I just did a Kogan (Voda) to Vodafone port and it was flawless, less than an hour process…

  • Yeah I've done this a few times without thinking and can take a couple days. Once it took up to a week. I like to hassle the new provider and get credit to my account as a result of the delay. Once I got like two months free.

  • I used to say it never happened going Voda to Voda, but I had a situation where they decided my number was disconnected because my credit ran out on the previous provider.

Optus to Optus has always been horrible, mainly because Optus refuses to spend any money on IT system development or maintenance. They don't seem to realise that they could get rid of a bunch of staff saving them hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for a 30K IT spend.

  • Ok here is the update guys. 2 out of 2 times I ported from an Optus reseller to Optus had problems. That's 100%! Finally sorted after third time hassling them. The lady on Live chat has to sort it out manually, I am not sure what she did, but it seemed like she had to eyeball the whole process.

So I guess if you do need to do "porting", here are some tips. The official time frame for porting is up to 4 hours. Live chat will not do anything if you are within the 4 hours. If you do need to get in touch with Live chat, choose "Track your order" instead of "Technical support". Tech support seems to only able to escalate the issue and ask you to wait 24 hours. So to summarise, if you need to do "porting"(since it is not really porting to Optus from Optus?), it will take at least 4 hours(maybe longer as others has pointed out) and AT LEAST one chat/call to customer services because they will only do it manually if 4 hours has passed.
