5.5-6" Android Phone Dilemma - What to Buy

My last phone has died and I've been given a budget of 1k to pick up a new phone. Initially I was thinking of getting a <5.0 inch for pocketability, but it seems nearly all premium phones now are around the 5.5-6" mark, so I've decided to go bigger. Maybe someone can comment around if it's worth carrying around the extra bulk?

Phones I'm looking at all seem to have shortcomings:

OnePlus5T: Seems like the closest fit but camera is apparently not as good as some and no IP rating
Nokia 8: dual sim is 2g only making in useless in Aus
S8: don't want touchwiz or fragile screens
LGV30: is it safe to buy LG phones again? (bootloop issues)
Mate10Pro: Seems like it ticks a lot of boxes, but might not have the updates of a Pixel/OnePlus phone, also no audio jack and sd card (although maybe I'm less worried about that)
Pixel 2XL: No dual Sim
ZTE Axon 7: Actually seems like the best fit so far, but can it be at 1/3 of what some of these other phones cost?

I probably care less about the SD card due to 128Gb options these days (even 64Gb is probably enough for me). But dual sim, water resistance, camera, timely updates, and potentially up to date versions of Lineage OS into the distant future are big attractions.

So can someone help me make sense of all this?

I have a Mate 10 (not the pro), that supercharge is an extremely underrated feature, its even faster than the Dash charge if you calculate the mah difference…

    • I always charged overnight based on the principle that a slower charge provides better long term battery longevity, but yes it can be pretty handy when in a bind expecially if you aren't getting a full day from a phone

Usually you can find information on the internet.

You've got a pretty decent budget - If you want the best "small phone" for pockability and specs, you can't go past the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact. It's got all the big phone specs, but squeezed into a small phone (with the main differences only being the screen and size).

    • Coming from a z5 this was the first one on my list, however the market has coerced me into going bigger. I figured in the end I will never know if I never go, and if I bankrolled my own phone later it would be a cheaper option for me to go back to a smaller unit than decide to get a bigger one

      • I used one of the Xperia Compacts years ago and then went to the Z2 which wasn't actually that much bigger physically, but if felt much bigger. It took me quite some time to get used to, especially in my pocket when I sat down. The corner of the phone sticking out left wear holes in my jeans pocket.

I'm using a Note 8 now - love the functionality, but I usually carry a briefcase and the most annoying thing is trying to use it with one hand (there's a one-handed mode, but it's not the same). A small phone feels much more secure in the hand.

If the Xperia compacts had a 1080 screen, I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

User preference really - whatever you get, you'll get used to it sooner or later.

This is my experience exactly with my z5, I am banking on that it's was just the phones hard corner design and that if it had a rounded back like HTC or LG G4 then it may no be an issue despite being bigger (at least that's the hope)

I found dual sim phones to be extremely useful for travel purposes.

Large phones may have issues fitting into skinny jeans comfortably.

Can totally shout out the ZTE Axon 7. By far the best value phone if your list.
