Taxify Foreign Transaction Fees - has anyone had them?

I have been receiving foreign transaction fees when using Taxify.

I was first tipped off about this when a Taxify driver told me his wife had received a fee.

I then checked my NAB statement and yes a foreign transaction fee was included. I switched to using an ANZ card and the fee is not isolated but the charges appear to be more than what is displayed in the app. For example, approximately 30 cents added to a journey of around $10.

I contacted Taxify about this and they replied with the below. Has anyone else experienced these fees? Do you think it’s fair? I can’t see this going down well with Australian consumers. If they are processing payments offshore, I don’t think it’s fair to ask the consumer to follow up with their bank.

Thank you for contacting us.

There may be foreign transaction fees from your bank while using our service. In our experience most banks charge a rather small fee, however, should you feel the charge is unreasonable we recommend contacting your bank for further assistance
.

Here is a paragraph from our terms and conditions:

- 2.4 When making credit card and mobile payments, a service fee is added per each order of transportation service. The named service fee includes payment commission fees, incl. Visa / MasterCard service fees. The amount of the service fee is displayed in the mobile app. In the event that the mobile payment intermediary enacts a fee for the usage of the payment service, which has to be paid by the customers separately, then the named fees are not included in the Taxify credit card and mobile payment fee.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards

    overseas processing merchant. beware…

  • Avoid the merchant or avoid the fee. Cards with No Overseas Transaction Fees

    • But they will still build in some extra charges, won’t they?

What you see on the statement will be different than what you see in the app?

Anyways this takes a lot of effort to do and it assumes you have one of these cards. It’s poor form to expect this from the consumer when they are paying in AUD in my view.

  • I can confirm that Taxify must charge from an account that is not domiciled within Australia because you have been hit with an overseas transaction charge. Their response is standard from most companies "we don't charge it, your bank does, speak to them". True but they only charge it because Taxify likely charge from an overseas credit card processor rather than from within Australia in Australian dollars. It's not a killer reason not to use them but until they change the way that they choose to bill, it does make Uber more attractive, all other things being equal.

  • I would say use Divi pay with your existing card but they have issues at the moment.

  • Same deal. Bit suss. How do u tell what currency is being charged?

  • My fare was 16% higher than the actual receipt amount. May avoid in the future…

  • This happened to me too - I found that the amount I was being charged (in AUD) was higher than what was on the invoice. Then in addition to that I was being charged a foreign transaction fee by my bank. I've stopped using Taxify.
