2018 Toyota Camry - What Is a Realistic Amount to Haggle?

If it were up to me, I would be buying a used car however my dad would like to get a new 2018 Camry.

He has busted his arse working two jobs for as long as I can remember to give me the life I have so I thought I would take it upon myself to get him the best deal possible.

The online RRP for a new 2018 Camry SX is around $42K however I've been able to get a quote for $39K from a dealer.

Is there a rule of thumb for how much you can haggle down the price of a brand new car?

Cheers guys

Sorry for the light off-topic. Would it be the better option to get a base Ascent hybrid model? It seems to be cheaper, has similar features, better on fuel and more dynamic and quiter. Ascent Hybrid will also have no "Sport" suspension and crazy wheels meaning better ride.

From the specs you will miss out on navigation and wireless charging.

EDIT: looking at your quote that was a 3.5 engine most likely. In this case hybrid is going to be slower obviously:)

I agree with andy. If you do a lot of urban driving, getting the ascent hybrid is a good idea. The camry is a fuel drain with urban driving.

With the new gen Camrys, they dont look like bland pancakes anymore. Forego the sports edition

    • If it were up to me, I would rather have better fuel economy but my dad has his heart set on a 3.5L.

He would get a mustang if he had the money.

My taste would be more in line with what you're suggesting. At first I tried to talk him into a more frugal car but my mother had a great point. He deserves to be happy.

Even if such a purchase makes my frugal self cringe.

There is nothing wrong with 3.5L as well, previous gen Aurion was properly fast. The current gen should be even better. Problem is there is almost nowhere to use that power legally.

        • Yeah I can't see my dad speeding anywhere but he really wants the power of the 3.5L.

$3k discount is realistically about all this new model has, and I think you've done well to get that tbh.

New Camry is a good car, and the SX looks the goods with the 19s…nice choice :)

Whether you do it through the dealer or not, definitely get window tint. Not even privacy glass on this new one which is crap :/

    • Do you work for Toyota or Suzuki nowadays?

In your professional experience, it it possible to get something like $3K discount plus sunroof thrown in for free?

Other friends are telling me they usually get around $5K discounts for there new cars.

I've never bought new so I'm a bit ignorant about this.

I work for Toyota now (hence why I set the associated store to show my Employer tag!) :)

Every car's margin is different. Toyota have set a different approach for these new cars - Camry & CHR, in that they don't have large margins.

$3k is about it on Camry, Prado at RRP is about $6k (that is a $70k car though), LandCruiser Sahara is $13k (that's a $133k car).

So there is no hard and fast rule on margins. Your friends are just being idiots, and don't worry you will hear a fair few idiotic suggestions by people with no idea.

        • Silly me, I should have known from the tag.

Do you only sell locally or would I be able to talk to you about buying a Camry?

Do you mind if I PM you?

        • @Hogg:

I wouldnt worry, without crunching the numbers you've got a good deal and wouldn't be worth my time to work it out any better, especially as different states have different registration costs :/

Thanks for all the replies so far Spaceback. I really appreciate the perspective you've given.

          Is your staff discount 20%?

          Fk lol I wish 😂

  • It's a good choice and a finalist in this years World Car Awards.

Reviews generally say its the best Camry to date, albeit a little boring to drive.

    • I don't think my dad will be racing anyone anytime soon. I think the good looks and reliability plus the knowledge that he has some power under the hood would makeit the ideal car for him.

    $1

    • Or 25% or somewhere in between.

    • Not $80,000

  • Hi there,

Did any 1 had luck getting a good price on Camry SL Hybrid in Metallic paint in Melbourne. I offered 40K but was refused, best they could do was $42990.00.

    Thank you.

    • What's the RRP?

FYI, we couldn't get anything better than $39K.

      • thanks, that is a quite good price on SL Hybrid. The RRP is $46190.00 in Melbourne.

        • Sorry that I wasn't clear. It was the 3.5L SX that we got for that price.

It seems like $3K discount is as far as we could push it although I am not an amazing negotiator.

So it seems like you've gotten the best deal you could.

        • @Hogg:

          thank you.
