About Private Health Insurance Benefits over Medicare Card

I have just been granted residency in Australia. I have medicare card now but I am confused with the private health insurance. What are the benefits of private health insurance? Is it necessary to have private health insurance? Which health insurance is eligible for medicare exemption.

Please advise me on this.
