Small CCTV Type Camera for a Bird Nest Box

I'm essentially after a little camera to monitor baby birds (cockatiels) in a nesting box, as the parents not tame and I dislike disturbing them, causing them a lot of stress.
Features I'm after:

  • IR Night vision (Not bright visible LED's as chicks eyes are sensitive to light)
  • Compact/small (the box isn't all that large, around 30x30x70 cm)
  • Preferably no batteries as I need 24/7 footage

I've looked at many cameras such as surveillance etc. but most are far too large. I've been suggested a baby monitor and liked the look of the Zmodo 720p mini camera mentioned in another forum post about a baby monitor, but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

When you work it out can you live stream the feed to the ozbargain community?

  • Xiaofang, or build one with a raspberry pi zero.

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/wireless-hidden-ip-camera Search for spy camera or nanny cam. Most CCD type cameras are IR sensitive, if they don't come with an IR light source (supposed to be invisible, but they generally emit faint red visible light which won't be harmful). You can add an independent light source if necessary e.g. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/48-LED-Illuminator-IR-Infrared-N… I'm sure you can find a way to run it off a small plugpack or old car battery. IR light sources are typically nothing more than a power source, a resistor and a bunch of "invisible" LEDs.

This one seems to tick all your boxes: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Full-HD-1080P-Wireless-IP-Hidden-Ca… and will run from a micro USB, so you just plug in the charger/plugpack or use a USB power bank.

  • another issue is the focal length of the camera. you need to make sure whatever you get can focus on near-field objects

  • if you're after the size, I guess Arlo pro might be good. It's got night vision and motion sensor too. Only problem is that it wont' stream 24/7.
