Sony X900E or X940E? ( 75" UHD TV)

Looking at purchasing a 75" UHD TV.

Picked Sony purely on the fact is that we have always had a Sony.

Mostly used for general TV use, streaming and gaming.

Want to know if the price is worth the x940e ? Or is a x900e just as good?

Or any other recommendations. I have been pricing both TVs and they are slowly dropping in price so a price range would be between $3500-$4000 at this point.

  • could I suggest a 65" OLED instead?

    • What did you have in mind?

  • I have the X900E and I love it, looks real good with HDR content!

This might be handy - a comparision between the Sony 2017 TVs: https://img.bbystatic.com/BestBuy_US/store/ee/2017/tvv/misc/…

Looks like the only differences are better image processing and more precise local dimming.

    • Can't see how the local dimming would make it THAT much better. Processor i can understand.

I like the chart, all the reviews seem to have preference on the 900E

It appears some of the extra processing they put into the 930 makes it a quite sluggish with no discernible difference in picture or at least that warrants the difference in price.

Since they went to a full backlit Panel instead of edge lit LED LCD it's become a much better TV the android system is horrible whichever way you look at it.

I've been going through all of this with Sony who owe me a TV they broke last years model that i had by trying to be a little smart with me.

    • What do you see that lacks with the android system?

It's just Sony's interface it was quite rigid and the home page was is a bit of a mess

It has got better but i still go through and kill all the things that are not required so you don't get a heap of ads i guess you could compare it to a PC the more background apps running the less responsive it is.

Clean it up and it's easier disabling them from just the setting menu can often have them reappear

They only just allowed you to rearrange the order so you can keep all the apps you use together

But you can't modify it much more than that

So you have on the home screen

Ads takes up 3/4 of home page so when disabled it's just blank space. but it's better than waiting for them to load

Sony Featured Apps which sometimes run in conflict with apps from Google play store (i.e google has newer version of Stan than Sony even though both coming from same place until you update stan will keep reminding you there is a newer version) so you end up with 2 versions

    Google play Apps

    Games

    Inputs

    Settings

So i've killed all ads I'd prefer the inputs at the top then just one bar of apps instead of Sonys and Googles

Maybe one day they will let you rearrange the whole thing

One thing that the 940 will get at a date still to be determined is Dolby vision through a firmware update which should give it a picture that is noticeably better but it could be a 6 months a year who knows yet but it has been promised we normally end up being last on the list for updates.

I know you're after 75" but the 65" A1 OLED is just amazing which i think i'd seen for $4500

    • Thanks Toons, will take a look into the A1 also.

Hands down the best out of the 3 it was going for 7500 but in this current sale for Chinese new year it's dropped a lot it also has twin processors so its much faster in response

They have all ditched 3D because it's the most under utilised feature.

You can connect a keyboard up to them which helps filling in all the settings usernames passwords etc.

Otherwise depending on how many streaming services you have you can be there a while

  • What did you end up going with

      Hey Toons,

Have to thank you once again for your help. I walked into my local Good Guys and ended up buying the 75" X8500e for a touch under $3000 with extended warranty and so I jumped at the deal.

Wasnt what I was looking for all together but now that I have got it I really cant complain.

As long as you're happy all that matters

Sony came through with the 9000E they owed me for breaking my older model and it's a huge step up was surprised the same range could improve on picture so much, when they said it's actually not too far the OLED screens i though yeah usual Bull from manufacturer but now i've had it for a coupe of weeks and seen it perform can't knock it

No washout on colour like i was getting with the previous one the full 4k HDR stuff looks amazing as it should

So i'm back to having a bit more faith they can get things right
