Need a Good VPN for China Trip

I am looking for a good speed vpn to use during my 4 weeks trip in China. I don't mind to pay for a month but as long as it works and can access gmail, google map then I am happy. Any advices and recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I was over there in July and used ExpressVPN. Cuts out occasionally but gets the job done.

    • Thanks

  • I bought Torguard to use in China and would recommend the service. Think they're still offering 50% off lifetime subscription. Hit and miss when connecting to WiFi and 4G. Torguard service was connected to instantly using home WiFi and 4G tethered from China Mobile and China Unicom sim cards. Sometimes it'll take forever to connect or won't connect at all. Best servers I found were HK 2 and surprisingly, Sydney Australia. Decent speeds, I could access gmail, gmaps, facebook, messenger, whatsapp etc with minimal lag issues. Youtube videos buffer well at 480p, a bit slow at 720p and anything higher will take forever or never load.

I had VyprVPN and it would not connect to anything. Tunnelbear was also a no go. There are some VPNs based in China with good connection to fb, google, instagram and all that but would not trust a company based in China with your data.

    • Thanks mate will definitely look into Torguard

  • VyprVPN - Have used for years and still use it when there - do ~8 visits a year.

    • Hi mate the guy above you just said VyprVPN is not working in China. Did you buy the paid version? Is it still fully working as at today?

      • Bit late but yep I use the paid one for years and our staff use it there as well.

We are an importer/exporter with offices in China. Was working as of 3 days ago that I know of.

i also use it here in Aus.

        • Thanks for the confirmation mate. I'll look into this one.

      • Can't comment on the paid one since I used the free one. The free one rarely connects and when it does, it disconnects relatively quickly.

  • If you’re travel through Singapore on the way then get a starting sim. Preorder it and collect in Singapore airport.
It’s what I used last year in Beijing.

    • Yea I know that card but I am flying directly this time. How do you pre order starhub sim card online?

You dont need to pre-order a starhub sim. Just get it from a 7-Eleven in Terminal 1 or 2. It cost $15. After you purchase, download the Starhub Happy Sim app to activate your selected data plan.

If your sim is a non-china sim, you will get access to all restricted services like google, FB, etc.

But if you are flying direct, there is no way to purchase the starhub sim.

        • Yeah definitely want to get it next time when I head over Singapore. I read a lot of good stuffs on starhub sim cards.

  • I didn't use one and my hotel ended up having one on its network so that worked well. But what I can say is download wechat before you go, vpn or no vpn. You can then use this to log into free wifi all over the place.

  • I used PIA recently and could access everything I needed through wi-fi hotspots, didn't use a data SIM. By the way Google maps was offset from actual location a block or so. I was told this is done deliberately.

    • Thanks mate I'll look into PIA. Is there any deals going on?
What map app did you use in China for street direction etc?

Think PIA do some cheap one month deals. As for navigation I was lucky to be traveling with some locals, enjoy your trip.

  • Anyone know if VPN Unlimited works in China? I bought the lifetime license long time ago.
