4G Data Management

Im looking at purchasing an iPad for my son for his birthday. Im looking at the optus deal as its a tad cheaper than telstra and one big plus is Netflix un-metered.

Now my issue is how do I manage the allocated 10gb of data per month included. He will obviously use wifi at home but I dont want to get unexpected phone bills for exceeding the data allowance when away from wifi.

Does the iPad have a feature to manage this of is there a reliable app to achieve this. Im not fussed if he uses all 10gb in the first day of the month (lesson to be learned).

  • Also look at pre-paid data and outright iPad vs. postpaid plan including device - may prevent 'bill shock' as once your son has used up his monthly prepaid allocation there's absolutely no way you can be charged for excess. You could also recharge early should he run out and need extra data for the month (for whatever reason).

  • I was never able to find a reliable app (that would cut off data if all used) which is one reason I've never signed up to a post-paid plan. If I were you I would either get him on prepaid, or make the plan his financial responsibility if he is aged 13+ and therefore old enough to have a job (you can check how much data is used through the settings if you reset the counter each month, so he can keep on top of it himself if he is motivated to) - if he goes over and gets a bill for a few hundred dollars then he'll have to pay it, or borrow from you and pay you back, and learn a good lesson.
